Rumor: C/O2011 to be issued laptop computers

Sorry to resurrect, but here's the Class of 2011 computer, and it ain't a laptop:

<a href="http://candidatedata.usna.edu/computerspecs.asp%5B/url%5D">http://candidatedata.usna.edu/computerspecs.asp</a></p>

Pretty nice machine

Wow, that's like a 4 year old computer...

No core 2 duo???
512 DDR2??? seriously? I didn't know they made 512 cards anymore... (kidding, but seriously)

But I'm surprised they include a TV Tuner...whatev, I'm buyin a laptop!

Exactly, sounds like they want to force mids into focusing on the hw :) with only 512 of RAM and a single processor (even with 3.4 ghz and its fairly good chipset), it won't be able to handle the very common multi tasking I saw on my visit (aim/youtube/myspace/facebook/music/email/and uhh.. word..).

hahaha ^^^

Hahaha. I seriously doubt that. My computer is not all that great, but it's a Dell and it's a 3.0ghz processor with only 512DDR2 ram. And, compared to alot of other computers with better specs, my computer runs quite fast.

Just don't load your computer up with so much crap, and you'll be just fine. I'm not sure what else you would need your computer for, but I'm sure "(aim/youtube/myspace/facebook/music/email/and uhh.. word..)" will be all that you need/run.

Dash--

Buy a laptop if you want, but you won't be able to get on the internet or the intranet with it. Only the issued computers are permitted on the DoD network, and while some people have managed to get their personal PCs hooked up, Ward Hall usually finds out pretty quickly and shuts your port down.

I thought about bringing my laptop with me, but figured it wasn't worth the hassle as I would barely use it.

You might want to hold off on that laptop. It might be by Company but our Mid said Plebes could not use laptops. Probably at their sponsors house would be o.k.

Dang, that's roughly twice as good as my 2010 tablet at USAFA...and upgradable...:(

That page is virtually unchanged since December of 2005. The only difference is the class year that is listed.

The computer listed there is very low spec. When my son visited the academy, the computers they had were much better than that, and there was a standard printer that everyone had.

December 2005 version:
<a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20051216031309/http://candidatedata.usna.edu/computerspecs.asp%5B/url%5D">http://web.archive.org/web/20051216031309/http://candidatedata.usna.edu/computerspecs.asp</a></p>

You can get any printer that you want, it does not come with the system. Most everyone purchases the printer at the Mid Store over parents weekend. The Mid store last year carried an HP color printer/scanner/copier. Similar to this years models C3180 or C4180 and sold for about $120 in the Mid store. One of the reasons everyone generally has the same printer is supplies, as a plebe it will be very difficult to get out to one of the office stores to purchase ink if you run out so when chosing a model most go with what one that the Mid Store carries ink for.

I asked my Plebe about this rumor a while back and she shared that the Plebes all heard USNA does NOT want laptops issued due to the problems of more theft - more loss - and more hassle as a Plebe would travel and possibly leave it somewhere. A 'standard floor model' eliminates a heck of alot of issues. Makes sense to me.

Plebes also do not need a laptop for going to the Library as the Library has many computers for Mids to use. Thumb (jump) drives are also apart of the standard issue so carrying files around is not difficult.

My Mid took his personal laptop to keep at his sponsors home, it came back home at Christmas break as he said he really did not need it nor was he using it. Personal - non USNA issue - computers cannot be connected to the USNA network.

For clarification,

There is a company printer (shared by everyone in the company, unless you have your own), but it is recommended to get your own.

The only computer allowed to be connected to NADN is issued or similar ITSD approved Dell device.

Modifications to the computer system are usually not authorized.

Other computers are usually allowed (company approval), but are not allowed to touch the NADN network.

Computing policies at USNA are becoming more tight. ITSD constantly monitors the network.

What I read here, everyone has their own printer.
Question: Does each and every Mid need a printer? From info we have learned, most share with roommates, i.e. 1 or 2 per room. Roommates decide who will have one, then parents or kids buy as appropriate and share cost.
Makes sense to me.

**Disclaimer: Our recent talking points info from current Mids and parents.

From what I saw, that never happened. Turth is it is a fair annoyance having to share a printer (transfering file, having to have them log onto their computer and waste their time, etc.), rather than just hitting print.

In my Mid's room all three have their own printers.

Same in my Plebe's room, and she rotated at the semester and it was this way both times

Thanks for the additional input All. I guess we'll play it by ear when the time comes. My former Mid says typewriters worked great in his day at Mother B!
