Run / walk exercise: COUCH-2-5k

Oh, I’ve used that site for running races. Are your powerwalk races specific to powerwalk racing or do you just do it “amidst” a regular 5k per say?

I am not fast myself and am not against - at all - anyone at any pace. But I did have to chuckle this morning on my run - I ran by a woman who was probably my age, maybe older and she was running so slowly that she was balancing her travel mug perfectly straight up in her hand like she was standing and talking to someone! She had to be going quite slow to not have her hand/arm move at all!!

That’s pretty amazing, I would not be capable of such a feat of balancing no matter what my pace!

I am not aware of any powerwalk-specific races. When I sign up for a race I double-check how long the course is open; it’s rarely a problem. My half marathon time is just under 3 hours (unless it’s a super hilly trail race), and let me tell you, it’s very motivating when I’m in a race with a 3-hour cutoff! I just envision them handing out the last medal to the person in front of me…

How is everybody doing in the summer heat?

I’ve done very little running (or walking)… but lots of gardening. Today I did cycle to the local lake and ride on the trail instead of my normal run. It was only 6 miles total and very easy/flat …but still good to be moving despite the 90degree/rising temp.

Last week we visited Rocky Mountain National Park, and it reminded me how lucky we are to have that option available as a day trip. The flat and gorgeous Sprague Lake trail is only 3/4 mile, so I did it twice. Would have loved to hike, but my husband’s back was bothering him.

Anybody trying a new exercise or routine? I’m all for fitness and attempting something new, but when I saw that June 21st is “World Naked Hiking Day”, it was a definite No Way Ever.

So far no takers for World Naked Hiking Day :grinning: But I hope some of you get to do some traditional hiking this weekend, perhaps for Father’s Day fun.

After a week away from running, I did do a 5k run this morning. I woke up before 6am, and decided to get up and catch the temps while still in low 60s. We then got some cloudcover, so I was able to a few hours of gardening too. Then topped of the morning with a trip to the city yard waste site. So worked lots of different muscles today

I would take you up on that. :slightly_smiling_face:

I’m retired and have been doing a lot of gardening in my own yard this year. But today for the first time I did a new thing… joined a church group that is growing veggies at a member’s large rural yard/farm for our local food pantries. I eyed the route for possibility biking the 5 miles there next time, but not enough shoulder for my meager cycling skills.

Hopefully next week I will talk myself into rising early enough to run ahead of the heat. If not, I will try to make a point to take some walks.

Summer early morning running can be SO refreshing! I’m not retired so in the summer I get up at 5:45 and am out the door by 6am to run before work. So much cooler - other people are out too - in fact, see the same crowd most days! I’m showered and have driven to work and at my desk by 7:45!

My other favorite time to run is dusk.

I’m on vacation and they have a wonderful labradoodle who is happy to have me walk her. The heat/humidity is an issue so I’ve been doing two shorter walks. The dog is a great walking companion.

At home I have 4 dogs to choose from: 1) a bulldog - no way, you can’t make me walk, I can plant my fanny and legs firmly in the ground and you can’t make me go; 2 and 3) labs who are 5 years old and hugely overweight and never were leash trained, so it is a real work out for my arms, and usually a NO; 4) a 15 year old husky, who is a great walking companion. The husky leaves home at a rapid pace and then slows way down on the return. Hmmm, sort of like me. He can’t really go the 10k steps so sometimes I go the first 6k or so with him and then get one of the chubby girl labs to finish.

3+ miles is a long way for a 15 year old dog!

When starting to run a few years ago and still working, I did a lot of early morning summer/fall running. I’d get up early (sometimes 4:30am) to have a softboiled egg and do about an hour of email and chatting with coworkers in European timezone. If there were no urgent issues, I’d go do my 5k run. It was the only time in my life that I really paid attention to exact time of sunrise. Eventually I learned that I could run without any breakfast, but I took a granola bar in case needed. These days I know it’s fine for me to just go for an early run with water and some Necco wafers in my pocket.

Dusk runs are nice too, but too hot here in the hottest part of summer. I do have a vivid memory of early days of running/panting at dusk when I accidentally sucked in an insect. Had to learn to strain the air between my teeth.

Well yesterday, for father’s day, to please DH, we went to the gym in the morning and I did a walk/run interval on the the treadmill equivalent to a 5K (3.1 mi) and did some other leg press and bike stuff. My goal is to get back to getting in the routine of going to the gym 3-4 days/week and staying for an hour. I went again today, but did less on the treadmill and did other leg an upper body stuff. Made it just shy of an hour, but I went, which was an accomplishment. Our schedule in the coming weeks and months may interfere with this goal, but…. I did my “5 k” for the first time is very long time.

Hey, that’s great! Keep up the good work.

So hard to get back into that habit and for it to be enjoyable, not a chore. Good for you!

My gym makes us reserve for classes, which turns out to be good for me because I have to go if I sign up. If I get there early or have a little extra time, I can do a little time on the treadmill. Would love to do a 5K!

Exactly, @gardenstategal!. Pre-covid it had become part of my routine, and while I can’t say I ever really looked forward to going, I did miss going to the gym for the first few months of covid lockdown. I did some zoom personal training, but didn’t really enjoy it. And I don’t like the elliptical. But for some reason I can motivate/push myself on the treadmill and do other upper/lower body stuff for a bit at the gym. I am not sure I will ever run another outdoor race, but I can continue to try to aim for and/or hopefully surpass the 5k on the treadmill. Thanks to you folks, I am in my gym clothes again today (had a dr appt this morning so had to dress appropriately for that). But at last there is a chance I’ll go, since I’ve changed. Most days I am home I wear gym clothes anyway, so we’ll see, LOL.
Proud of you, @gardenstategal, for going to classes. I always feel like a klutz in classes so I just do my own thing.

@jym626 , if there was a silver lining in covid, it’s that the classes are now filled with unfit, klutz people so I am having no trouble fitting in!

Thats a riot, @gardenstategal ! So one of the things DH wanted on amazon prime day was a fancy digital scale that measured all sorts of things . This one measures 9 things (eg weight, BMI, Body fat, lean mass, body water, muscle mass, etc). It arrived this afternoon. We each got on it…… and went right back to the gym!!! And yep—— did another 3.1 interval on the treadmill (though had to take a call towards the end so walked longer than I’d planned.). Have no clue what most of these measurements mean. No idea what is a good/bad, normal/not normal reading. Anyone know?

I’ve been having low back trouble, which I imagine is related to shlepping my GD around. I babysit 2-3 times a week (alternating with her other grandma). She is almost 6 months, and she isn’t tiny. I have had to honor my body and back off my workouts when my back seizes up. I am still walking every day, but I don’t always walk a full hour when my back complains.

So fun that you have time with your granddaughter. That is a tough age, when they have gained weight but have not yet mobile. It can put alot of stress on your body when they lurch. You are wise to honor your body when decided what things to do and not do.

I recommended Couch25K to a co-worker and they’ve started using it to get into better shape.

I’m 4 weeks into my Couch25k class. Today I ran 3 miles including hills, which showed on my pedometer app as 3 flights of stairs. The class has helped a lot. Enjoying running in the cooler weather in the mornings. Hopefully I will lose some weight.
