Thanks for the update. Good Job! I have to admit that in 2017 it took me much longer than 4 weeks to work up to 3 miles… and my running trail is almost totally flat.
Back then, my first priority was to get walking/running. (It seemed too much to adjust exercise and eating habits at the same time.) I think I did drop a few pounds, but most of the weight came off later, after I started eating better and tracking calories/nutrients. I like MyNetDiary app and still use it because I like the nutrition breakdowns. Other folks like MyFitnessPal and other methods. But really, even without any weight loss there are big fitness advantages to getting off the couch and moving
I like running, but I feel like eventually I’ll need to honor my aging body and switch back to walking (and other fitness pursuits). If others have done that, feel free to share that experience.
I’ve switched to personal training and walking. Today I mowed most of the long uphill road at our camp. Almost half a mile up, the kind that’s hard even to walk! It was encouraging that I had the strength to do it.
Wow, that mowing chore sounds like very productive exercise!!
I am really feeling for those living in the areas with long spells of HOT temps recently. In CO last week we had high 90s (and a few blips over 100, but not to bad with low humidity). But yesterday was cooler and cloudy. I ran early then gardened most of the day, expecting to stop when it got too hot. I had to get a jacket at one point when it got breezy before a bit of rain. Dreading the inevitable return of hotter weather.
My out-of-state kid (with fiancee) was camping this holiday weekend with my in-state kid. This morning we all had a wonderful morning strolling together in lovely botanic garden paths. Extra bonus time during coffee/chatting as we entered and then lunch break together before we left. Walking with my full family beats running any day of the week!
I have been happily walking instead of running for quite a few years. I also work out daily, alternating free weights, body weight (lots of push-ups), yoga. I find it difficult sometimes to accept that my body has to be treated differently as I age … but I have learned to change things up as needed to keep from hurting myself.
Am doing a combo of walking and running, but only about 3 or at most 4 times a week. Yesterday when I went to the gym they had a sign that the water was going to be off for 2 hours. I thought that was a health hazard and they should have closed for those 2 hours.
This thread is inspiring! I’m trying to get back into shape - reupped gym membership (haven’t gone in the three months since reactivating! ), continuing to walk 4x a week, run 1x every 10 days, and work out 2x week with light weights.
Does anyone have a recommendation for a scale they like? Mine is the old manual kind but it varies about 10 pounds if you step hard on it Need to bite the bullet and get a digital of some sort that tells me the truth (not sure if the other measurements some scales provide are helpful?).
Good for you for walking and running and doing weights. I hope you find a good way to get back to the gym if that’s your thing… maybe you need a local pal to go with you.
SCALES: Before I retired, I used on the old fashioned big scales (like at doctor’s office) at work. There was one at the work fitness center. Later when not enrolled there I used the one by the cafeteria. Now that I am home I use a digital scale my mother had. Ha, learned the hard way when helping her that it is NOT accurate on carpeting. I keep it in a corner of the bathroom. If there was a consensus here of a better newer option, I’d consider it.
Below is what I purchased from Amazon a couple years ago. I get on it and it tells me my weight. It’s quite simple. However, some folks may want to track their weight over time (weeks/months/years), so the Bluetooth communication with your phone may be a good idea for them.
I didn’t want that feature or any of the other fancier features such as body composition calculation, which probably isn’t very accurate. And every so often, I do get that measured hydrostatically or via Dexa scan anyway.
Thanks, Colorado_mom! A local gym buddy might be good. I just need to get back into the habit. That’s the hardest part. (ha I’m in my gym clothes now and could ideally go after logging off!)
shushiritto - that’s an elegant looking scale and the video was inspiring lol. The numbers look lightish - are they easy to read? I’m used to the old moving wand around static printed numbers lol. I feel like I can’t get away from the truth with digital, though!
Thanks, jym626! Are the numbers easy to read? They look a little light but that could be the picture. I’d love some of that additional health info - but wondering how accurate bone mass assessment could be from just standing on the scale? Maybe so, just can’t picture how that would work!
I also bought a Renpho scale from Amazon. It looks the same as jym’s. I only weigh once a week, but have liked it and enjoyed looking through the additional bits of information, although I don’t know how accurate they are.
I thought this point was interesting - " None of the scales we reviewed for this guide connect to your phone. If you want a smart scale—one that automatically tracks weight measurements and other biometric data—check out our guide to smart scales. Keep in mind, though, that overall we’ve found those connected scales to be more finicky and less reliable."
I am ok without pairing to cellphone since I log my approx-weekly weights into MyNetDiary, with 3 years of history. I mainly want accuracy/consistency. It could be nice though to have body composition info.
