Running...

Well I have been doing the 5 mile thing for a week straight.. no "off" days, or easy/medium days. Is this bad?

The only thing that keeps me going is my music.. without that I'd probably fall over at 30 min or so. Is there any possiblity of my heart rate going too high? I fear that if I push myself too far then I might die or something.. is this true? I have heard incidents of people dieing while exercising.. thoughts?

Also, is it cheating to drink water? I feel as if drinking water gives me an extra boost.. it just makes the run easier and it feels wrong.. might sound stupid but if you see it from my point you may understand..

One more thing; is it a good idea to add weight lifting? I could easily do it in the evening before I sleep. Not heavy lifting, but numerous bicep curls, pushups, benchpress. Also, is doing crunches before my running beneficial? I can already feel my abs below my fat so I don't know if there's any point. Thanks

you should definetly be drinking water if youre running five miles. The way you will injure yourself is if you get dehydrated...

I'd change up your routine a bit if I were you (Indian). I'm not truly a runner per se, I play a couple different sports and run a couple times a week but you won't find me training for a 10K or anything. I can run my miles under 6 minutes but my longer distances are pretty mediocare. I'd definitely take some some off days just to give your muscles some time to recover, and I'd alter your routine on occassion so that you don't get bored and your body doesn't get too used to it.

Your biggest risk of dying through exercise would come if you have a preexisting medical condition, especially a heart or respitory problem, so that may be worth checking out with a doctor. Remember to always push yourself sanely. Drinking water is definitely not cheating. Hydration is very, very important to exercise and not being properly hydrated does put you at risk of very serious injury as well as not so serious but painful and annoying ones such as cramps. It is a good idea to not only stay hydrated during and after exercise but before as well. By the time you are thirsty it is already too late, and trust me if you are well hydrated before doing activity you will feel much better.

Weight training is a good idea for anyone. It will help build up your overall strength and overall ability to burn calories. Remember though you are training as a runner, not as a powerlifter, so lift accordingly. Do not neglect your lower body. Developing your lower body will not only help you run faster, it can also help prevent injury.

remember, if you're going to run on a treadmill, which I highly suggest not doing, always put it on at least a 2% incline because it will prevent much dmg to your knees caused by treadmills

wow, I can barely run one mile evevery other day.

best running website and message board on the net, screw that bodybuilder s hit

Sincerely,
a guy who runs 65 miles/week and 4:28 mile

oh ya, you're running way too hard, you burn roughly the same amount of calories regardless of the pace albeit if you go faster you'll burn more calories throughout the day recovering but lets stick with the basics. Also, 5 miles is NOT 850 calories unless you have the treadmill on some insane incline.

Definately drink water / gatorade / powerade while you're running... otherwise, you will get sick and/or dehydrated. Keep drinking!

Don't you folks read books!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Build muscle, which would increase the metabolism, leading to a faster reduction in body fat. If you run too much, you'll will burn muscle, thus, it won't gurantee that you will loose fat. Have you ever seen a 200 lbs or body builder as a long-run marathon runner? Notice that many people that run too much loose musle tissue.

nobody mentioned "bodybuilder s hit"

people that only run look skinny, weak, and sick.
