Rush

Hi, I was wondering how competitive sorority rush is? What is the process like - what can I expect? How difficult is it to be involved in other clubs and activities when you belong to a sorority? Thanks!

I am not in a sorority, but one of my best friends is and she tells me the goss, ha ha. I know the rush process is pretty brutal (one of the things that really bothered my friend was the way they pick the girls - it kind of turns into a “pretty” competition), and I know it’s difficult to be involved in other things. After three years in the sorority she is going inactive next year because it started consuming her life. She loved it in the beginning, but now she is ready to move on. All the sororities have different reputations, etc, too. I know you go around to all the houses when you’re rushing and then you pick your top three and you’re guaranteed to get one of them (or something along those very rough lines).

If anyone knows more about the process, feel free to correct me! : )

A sorority consuming your life is not true. It is what you make of it - if you want to be in a sorority and be on exec or any other position, it will be a time commitment. Or, you can simply be a part of the group, eat dank food at the house with your friends, and be involved in other things on campus. Ask any sorority girl who is not on exec in their sorority how much time they “spend” on their sorority, and it is legit once a week for chapter. That’s it. Again, it is up to the individual. Sorority girls in on-campus activities: heads of Dance Marathon committees (big deal), SENIOR CLASS PRESIDENT, varsity athletes, etc. The list goes on and on.

The friend I mentioned had an exec position so it did consume her life. I’m sure it’s different if you’re just a member.

I’m rushing this fall too! Would love any details or advice I can get.

Yes, I know to go in with an open mind :)

I know annn has written posts about rushing in the past because she’s in a sorority, so if you look up her other posts you can read some more info. Just somewhere to start! : )

I have to agree with jambaby that all the sororities have different reputations. Certain sororities have a reputation for being “pretty” and from what I hear are a lot more competitive. I had a friend that was a Tri Sig and she said that they just picked the girls they liked (personality-wise). Before Rush, I would ask around about each sororities reputation and see which one you think would be the best fit with you.

Could someone please PM me the reputations of the different sororities at UNC? I would REALLY appreciate it.

I am from out of state and am really nervous about rush since I don’t know anyone at UNC. Do you think that being from out of state will make rush more difficult and hurt my chances?
