When you rush for a sorority is everyone guaranteed a bid? If not, about how many people usually don’t get offered a bid?
No to the first question and no one knows the #'s for the second. Why would someone be guarenteed a spot in at least one sorority if the entire process is about finding a group of people who you will be friends with for at least the next three years?
@2015ct11 is partially incorrect.
They have released the numbers to StudLife in the past, typically when discussing whether or not to add new sororities on campus (AOPi & KD being the most recent). I know the numbers were released for at least the 2009, 2010, & 2012 years, possibly more. They might also list it on panhel’s site.
I was not in a sorority, so I don’t particularly care about the rush process, but my freshman roommate failed to receive a bid. She chose to be a member of the colonizing AOPi class (founded my freshman year in the Spring, after recruitment).
I’m not going to spend a lot of time searching, but here’s one article where the numbers given were 274 joining vs 311 rushing. They don’t flat out say how many didn’t get bids though, and some of that 37-girl difference is due to some people choosing not to join even if they did get a bid (I have known several girls who actively turned down joining greek life because they only got bids from AOPi or KD).

150 more girls rushed this year vs previous years and roughly 80% received bids. Because of this Panhellenic recently voted to bring a new sorority to campus officially arriving next January after formal recruitment. It has not been announced which chapter is coming to Wash U. Here’s an article with more info
There were about 500 women registered for recruitment; and it was closer to 90% who got bids. Half of those who did not dropped out of the process voluntarily before bid day. Panhel is bringing on a new sorority because the goal is for every person going through recruitment to find the right fit in a sorority. Especially with the increase in class size as Wash U expands, it is not feasible to do that with only eight sororities. In general, you are not guaranteed a bid just by registering. However, if you are still seeing sororities on the day before Bid Day, you are guaranteed a bid from one of them*.
*exceptions apply but it’s not worth going into detail into the process
