So I want to take a new foreign language in college (in high school I took Spanish)...Russian seems like an interesting option, but I admit that the Cyrillic alphabet seems intimidating (although I've heard that people are typically able to learn it within a week or two).

I guess I'm just looking for encouragement...how positive were your experiences learning this language?

Don't be intimidated (especially by the Cyrillic alphabet). It's rather easy to learn and yes, it's easily learnable in 1-2 weeks. You can teach it to yourself within a day if you like (give yourself 5 hours or so and you'll see how easy it is). True familiarity with the Cyrillic alphabet's role in Russian takes experience, however, especially with the various pronunciations each can take (although for most letters, there are strict pronunciations assigned per position in a word).

i'm currently in russian 1, and the alphabet took about a week to learn. of course, after that you need to learn the cursive/script form of the letters, which took about another week. it has been somewhat difficult so far, but if you're intersted in it like i am its all good.

If you are familiar with the Greek alphabet, then the Russian alphabet should be easy to learn. The hardest part about Russian is the many different grammatical cases (nominative, prepositional, accusative, genitive, etc.) one has to memorize in order to learn the language.
