What's the deal with the student health insurance program? Does anybody have it? Is the coverage good nationwide? Is there a lot of paperwork? Do all doctors visit need to be pre-approved?

I have the SHIP (with eye insurance extra). It’s really great. Speedy service at Gannett, delayed payments via bursar, and very good coverage nationwide.

thanks chendrix. As far as payments what are cost for a general visit, and prescriptions etc…

Actually even if you don’t have SHIP you still get speedy service at Gannett & delayed payments via bursar.

It really boils down to if you have other insurance or not. If you don’t, then you don’t really have a choice. You will be enrolled in SHIP and the charge will show up on your bursar bill.

In my case, SHIP is quite a bit more expensive than the insurance I have now.

Also, I called and spoke to Gannett yesterday. They confirmed that the cost of the “office visit” is the same regardless of what insurance you have. The lady said it would be $10 on the bursar bill and that it would only be higher if I needed labs or other things like x-rays. That is great because my co-pay is usually $25

well i have other insurance, but i have about 20000 dollars worth of external scholarships in my financial aid package, and i can add a loan to my financial aid to cover the insurance, and the loan would be absorbed by the scholarships, so in essence i would get free insurance, and can use the money currently spent on insurance to cover part of my efc

@Thold

you might want to confirm that with FinAid before you make a change like that. If that works for you, then that is great. That is not my understanding of how things are applied, but I am no expert for sure. I know in my own case, I was told that scholarships reduce the grant aid and that I would still have the loans

Keep in mind that SHIP does not cover any type of wellness care. It is only for when something goes wrong. Also, I am not sure if it is 12 months of coverage or only coverage during the school year. So, you might want to check on that as well.

It’s 12 months coverage.

And, it’s not as simple as “if you have other insurance”

I had other insurance provided through a parent’s work, but when SHIP sent the requirements for external insurance, we didn’t meet it, despite it being fairly comprehensive.

Some insurances don’t have an option that meets all the requirements of a SHIP exemption. In which case, you are required to get SHIP.

alright thanks for the info
From Financial aid, outside scholarships first go to knock out the student self help part of the finaid package (loans and work study) then they go to knock out the grant aid.
