<p>No, I don’t think they asked for it. They just did the best with a bad situation and got a deal about increasing tuition above standard for two years. After that it goes back to the old caps I think. But when they say 500 job cuts be aware that 300 of those will not be real people–just cuts of vacant positions that are still on the books. That’s why I just like to see the “real numbers” and not some percentages. Percent of WHAT I always say. There is no doubt this is a serious setback but it’s not a death sentence. They had some very nice double digit increases the last few years when the state was more flush. Along with a boom in research funding the UW was basically crapping money. Now they have to regroup a bit. Not always a bad idea after rapid growth. They have added/expanded three new campuses in the Seattle region the last few years. Not what you do when you are hurting for cash.</p>
