Wendell Logan, chair of the jazz studies dept. at Oberlin Conservatory, died yesterday. He had been ill for awhile, but still taught some this year, and conducted the Oberlin Jazz Orchestra. During the opening of the new jazz building, Wendell was honored with part of the building Commons space being named for him. His students--past and present--are very sad, but are honored to have had the chance to learn from him over the years.

Wendell Logan was an amazing teacher and a consummate musician. I had the privilege of sitting in on his Jazz History class a couple of times and both sessions were fascinating. I am very glad that he got to see the completion of the new facility for the program that he was so instrumental (and vocal) in building. The music at his funeral is going to be amazing.
