Safes in dorm

I have a small safe and have NEVER been bothered about it. I would suggest securing your laptop as well. Theft is rampant at many colleges.

Bolt it to the floor, seriously?, you guys have never owned a safe. The safe I have comes with a steel chain that you “handcuff” to your bed or somewhere unmovable. Investing atleast $100 would allow you to have a safe that can only be opened by the most skilled of theives that will requer a lot of drilling and heavy machinery.

I’m wondering about this too, whether I should bring a safe with me to college.

The Container Store carries small safes on a plastic-covered chains that you can secure in your closet, behind your bed on the post, etc. It’s small, but works well for jewelry.

S’s school has safes in ALL freshman dorm rooms, they are bolted down on a high shelf in each closet. Students can choose to “rent” them or not (most do not) but since they are in each room nobody would know one which ones are being used/worth breaking into. Safest thing is to lock your door whenever you leave even if just running down the hall for a few minutes, and use a lock on your laptop when not in use or unattended (laptops are one of the most common things stolen on college campuses)

Get the system called “Prey” for your laptop! It helps track down almost every stolen computer it’s on. And last time I checked, it was free. Many colleges are recommending it to their students now.

At my friend’s school all the desks have cabinets equipped for padlocks. Call housing services at your school and see if there’s anything like that provided. If not, maybe get a safe small enough to hide in a large dresser drawer or something. I don’t really think it’s so important to have some high tech security that’s gonna keep burglars out, just something to discourage friends or roommate’s friends who might suddenly have the impulse to pick up something valuable when nobody’s looking.

i honestly think a safe is a bit paranoid. it is unlikely that your roommate could steal stuff like laptops. just always lock your door when you leave
