Safetes with Middlebury feel

Try Kenyon I loved it and its alot like Midd just in ohio and less competitive. It has a smaller student body but it is the most beautiful campus in the WORLD according to forbes and I have to say I’d agree

Thanks for the Kenyon suggestion, how do you think it’s Chem/pre-med program is?

Lots of good suggestions here - take a look at Grinnell.

Thanks all for the great suggestions, we will look into grinnell

During (and still in!) my college search, I was VERY indecisive. I started off being enamored with the small LAC type school. My list has change a lot. Since your daughter is a junior her SAT’s have time to improve and an 800 on any section is spectacular! tell her to take the ACT as well. Actually, Sewanee is rated as the most beautiful campus followed by Rhodes then by wellesley (all girls). Even though it is competitive, have her take a look at Williams. Odly, I have 3 girl friends; the first had Amherst as top choice and was valedictorian 35 act outstanding ap’s nat. merit finalist blah blah didn’t get in but got into Bowdoin and loves it there! Second goes to Smith and says its quite a different lifestlye, third goes to Midd and raves about the community feel/intense school spirit. I wouldn’t recommend UVM. I’m from MN so I would have to agree that St. Olaf is quite outstanding as is Carleton (a little more spunky). Also, colorado college is definitely a place to look into- has the same ambience but definitely more unique among LAC’s (1 class every couple of weeks how cool!). Ithaca is lovely but would go to Cornell over Ithaca. Take a look at College of the Holy Cross- outstanding community, campus is pretty in the fall, I visited last year. I don’t think she can go wrong as many of these schools have an exchange (12 college exchange or the 5 college consortium) where you can attend another institution. My friend who goes to Bowdoin is going to stay at Amherst for a semester next year… middlebury is also included.

I agree with britta852, take a look at Colorado College. Recently ranked in top 10 for happiest students. Great outdoor lifestyle.

Thanks Brita, your gfs sound like excellent students. Amherst is very difficult and as we live in the tri-state area there is alot of competition. We have had many cousins that went to Williams , but at our large public HS,historically they seem to only take athletes. I know my D would love it too.!We are liberal,Jewish and not sure that Sewanee would be too conservative. We will look into Colorado and St. olaf and Midd and Bowdoin are my D’s first choices. Thanks for the generous input. good luck on your search.

Thanks for suggestions. I noticed that Middlebury, ed1 numbers were down a bit. So there’s always the hope that they may take more Ed1 students next year, or am I dreaming?

Bard? Not safe enough? Reed? Too liberal? Brandeis? Too commuter?

Mindy: latest report is that Midd’s ED numbers are a few up from last year (marginally), but still, there is always hope.

Final numbers, even for ED and even past the deadline, are not reported for several weeks due to international apps arriving late, etc.

“I noticed that Middlebury, ed1 numbers were down a bit.”

Mindy, according to the NY Times, Middlebury ED1 numbers were up a bit.

Mindy, do you mean Middlebury’s ED1 acceptances were down a bit, or ED1 applications were down a bit? Midd received 3 more ED1 applications this year than they did last year (654 to 657), but acceptances were down a bit. Some data from another post of mine (based on NYT figures):

Class of 2013 ED1 Data
648 Applications
274 Acceptances
42.284% Acceptance rate

Class of 2014 ED1 Data
654 Applications
262 Acceptances
40.0612% Acceptance rate

Applications have increased, and the acceptance rate has decreased. I don’t think we can really make any judgments about how many ED1 applicants they accept next year based on this data. If anything, I’d suggest that admissions become even more competitive and the admit rate decreases.

You are right, clearly a result of wishful thinking on my part. Hasn’t the population boomed ebbed a bit since my son applied in 2009.? I guess I am just looking for crumbs of hope as my daughter fell in love with this Middlebury and Bowdoin.

“Reed? Too liberal?”

Reed is a safety for no one; GPA + test scores + rank together account for only 20% of admission criteria. But Reed is indeed liberal! ;)
