Safeties for Tech/Design?

I have a list developed for my tech/design schools, and of the non-interview schools on my list are really competitive to get into academically.

Can anybody recommend me or direct me to any schools that have a strong design/tech BA program that don't require any interview/portfolio reviews? Something mid-tier, academically.

“mid-tier” is probably not a safety. This would be more of a “match”.

For safeties, you should be looking at your home-state public universities and/or community colleges. Some place that you are basically guaranteed to be admitted by, and that you can afford without boatloads of financial aid.

For example, in our area, one community college offers an A.A. in Theater Tech. [Theatre - Montgomery College, Maryland](<a href=“Academic Programs: Explore MC's Majors, Degrees, and Certificates | Montgomery College, Maryland”>Academic Programs: Explore MC's Majors, Degrees, and Certificates | Montgomery College, Maryland) and another offers a two year I.A.T.S.E. apprenticeship program with transferable college credits [Home Page](http://academic.pgcc.edu/tet/) All of the public universities in Maryland offer some kind of Theater major, most have the option of specializing in Theater Tech.

For “match” type schools, do a search with [College MatchMaker - Type of School](<a href=“College Search - BigFuture | College Board”>College Search - BigFuture | College Board) using the geographic, tuition, and GPA ranges that are important for you, and then see what turns up. You should find several that would work for you.

Some out-of-state public schools have reasonable costs as well. Although, at least with 4-year colleges, the less expensive schools are more competitive in a recession.

I’m not sure what you mean by mid-tier (a relative term) but there are many, many private colleges and universities with good reputations for theater mentioned here in other posts. In fact, there are too many to give a good answer. Look around. Not all schools with good theater departments are equally strong in technical theater but at least you will know where to look.

Finally, I would consider safeties among the interview/portfolio schools. Not all are equally competitive. Marymount Manhattan, for example, is a safety school compared to NYU. A lot of these schools, too, are mentioned here in other posts.

Good luck.

A safety for one person could be a match or a reach for another. Just because a college does not require an audition or portfolio review does not make it a safety. You should be looking for a school that does not require a portfolio review that is an academic and financial safety for you. Your HS guidance counselor should be able to help you with some schools that are academic safeties, then you can do the research on the technical theatre programs. If you post the names of schools that your counselor suggests people here may be able to give you feedback on those programs. If you post grades, scores, and rigor of course load people here may be able to suggest schools that fit the “safety” school bill with strong technical theatre.
