safety at temple

We too were hoping for honors and received nothing…

@3irishgirls we had hoped for honors too (really for the stipend for travel abroad) but didn’t receive it. Other than that though, the honors program wasn’t much of a big deal for me or my D. The housing was a perk, but most kids want to move off campus after freshman year and she wanted to be in another LLC anyway. The rest didn’t matter much. If I may ask, what are your reasons for wanting it?

Guaranteed housing for 4 years, a like-minded community, smaller classes and a few other perks. My daughter is not wowed by the city campus and knowing she could have lived there for her time at Temple would have been great. They do have a great program for her major so it all must be weighed.

Temple is very much a city campus. Didn’t think my D would love it as much as she does.

Best of luck to her wherever she decides to attend!!

We are very seriously considering Temple as well for 2017. My son has been accepted and we would love to make this his choice, but I don’t want the worry of his safety to interfere with his college life there. He has his concerns as well, but is his top 2 choice. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. He has been accepted into the honors college and auditioned into the Boyer School of Music.

@universitymom my D is a freshman at Tyler School of Art and I was more than a bit concerned that my naive suburban child would be okay at a big city school. After touring, I felt the security was as good as it could get at a university.

Then after the attacks last semester, I talked to her about it and she was still adamant that she felt safe and didn’t have concerns (but at the same time was cautious.) As she put it, “I’m not dumb, I won’t go to Rite Aid at midnight.”

One interesting thing she told me was that there are students everywhere almost always. And when we’ve visited, we’ve noticed that as well.

Temple is an amazing school. If you haven’t visited, spend a long weekend and talk to the students. They love their school and would be more than happy to share their stories.

This is exactly what we needed to hear. Thank you! We will be visiting very soon  Best of luck to your D!

Same to you and your son!

@veehee Thanks for your info. Temple Tyler School of Art was recommended to S18. How far are the arts facilities from the dorms? Has your D been happy with their art program? Is admission to Tyler very competitive and should we consider early action?

@magnetnh My D loves Tyler and Temple overall. The foundation year is intense, but the professors are very supportive and her critiques have been very positive from both students and teachers.

We found out about Tyler late in the college search so she didn’t apply early action. She presented her portfolio in person in January and applied shortly after that. She received her acceptance letter in March.

Not sure about how competitive admissions is to Tyler compared to other art schools–she got into every school she applied to so I’m guessing her portfolio was pretty good.

If you can, visit! The Tyler building is amazing! That’s what she really liked about the program. The building is relatively new. The facilities were top-notch and the studios had so much natural light. And everyone was super nice.

Most of the dorms are very close to Tyler. She was in Peabody which isnt being used next year, but J&H and 1940 are close too. Actually the entire campus is very walkable. It’s not spread out so you can walk from the north to the south end of campus in a few minutes.

@veehee Thanks so much. Although not too late, it was just recommended as S18 thought he had finalized his college list. We will plan to visit early fall when they are back in session.
