well, PC and SJWs just killed one of their own.

here is video of mob attack on students. Temple/city of Philly better not sweep this under the rug(which they seem to be doing). this is scary stuff.

my kid is there and he as he put it, it is a weird time there. there was a similar episode in 2014 but it only involved 5 girls(juveniles i think) who brutally attacked one or two Temple students, putting at least one of the Temple students in the hospital.

As horrible as the 2014 incident was, things seemed very safe for awhile. i’ve been on Temple campus several times after dark and i it is generally been safe. i believe these recent attacks cited to above were on Broad Street, which is a main Philly thoroughfare, and just west of Broad Street, which is a combination of Temple buildings, an athletic field, and North Philly. a lot of students live in this area and there can be incidents but not on this large of a scale. i thought there would have been more of a Temple police presence in this area as there are campus buildings close to where these attacks were.

Broad Street is tricky as both the northern and southern borders of campus on Broad interact with the city of philly and it can get a little shady there. but generally shady like a purse getting stolen, not horribly assaulted.

Agreed to above poster, it is scary, sevral parents called Temple as to wth was going on and what was Temple doing to protect the kids. they got answers they found reassuring. our kids have assured us of a greater and more visible police presence since the recent incdients as well i have seen officers around every time i have been on campus BTW.

the impression i had for recent assualts, is a lot of minors, it sounds like middle school and high school age, congregated on Broad Street, and some starting causing a lot of trouble, it is first time this has happened since 2013 on this large of a scale that i am aware of.

i have not read above stories yet, initailly, the intel the parents were getting were police were not around, as it turns out, tath was not accurate, police were trying to respond to things as quickly as they could.

as people on here may or may not know, Temple is in the middle of a rough neighborhood. general rule of thumb is on campus is usually fine but the further away get from campus, the dicier it gets, and it can get dicey very fast. with a subway stop right at Temple, anyone could get on and off subway quickly if they wanted to harm others or commit crimes. in fact, during the 2014 incident, i believe the defendants hopped on a bus and initally got away cause it is easy to hop on a bus(like i said Broad Street is main thoroughfare). Security cameras on Broad Street got good enough images of these young ladies that were apprehended a couple of days later. the main part of campus is east of Broad Street although if definitely overlaps Broad Street in several locations.

for anyone considering Temple, please post on here. i am in contact with other parents. although not are all on CC, i am sure some would be happy to join to talk to prospective parents and students more on this.

just to clarify, i am not aware of any major assault incidents in 2013. i first visited with my son in April 2013 and when i realized how much he liked Temple, i started paying more attention to safety issues since that time.

…Friday night, students were upset that Temple did not issue a “TU alert” about “large groups of juveniles along Broad Street” until almost two hours after the violence had begun.

Above is accurate from what i have gathered talking to other parents. i do not get the TU alerts but my kid does and a number of other parents get these alerts as well.

Our son is at Temple as well. When I talked to him last night he said students were in “ok, we’ve gotta be careful” mode. He isn’t seeing a lot of fearfulness.

My daughter is also at Temple and when we saw her this weekend (It was Parent & Family Weekend) we asked her how she and her friends were feeling and dealing with this. She wasn’t particularly concerned about it being an ongoing issue and reassured us she is staying alert and taking precautions.

Temple Alerts go out all the time but this one was delayed for some reason. I don’t get them but my D does and she follows their advice and stays clear of the area. Temple has a walking escort service (police ride along on a bike) and the new Flight service (their own version of an uber ride/app) so there are measures to stay safe. Plus we talked about personal safety and we did get her pepper spray.

Temple is a city campus without any fencing that separates it from the actual city area. In addition, the area surrounding it is very bad. When we visited Pratt in Brooklyn, we noticed the large fence around the campus and were told how after a certain hour it is locked down. Personally, that felt a bit too intense. Temple’s actual campus is lit up like it’s daylight at night and there are security cameras and call boxes everywhere. BroadStreet is the edge of campus, so you will potentially run the risk of something bad happening because you are with the general population.

For my daughter, the pros of going to a city school outweigh the cons. It is a personal decision though. Some students will not feel okay with it. However, colleges of all kinds experience unexpected violence, no matter where they are located. Virginia Tech is in a rural area and what happened there was horrific. Personally, I feel a little better knowing that Temple has some of the best campus police in addition to Philly police protecting the students. But it isn’t for everyone.

Thank you to everyone who responded. My dd is still very interested in Temple. I am still concerned. I am glad to know that parents think campus itself is safe.

Do most students live off campus as upper classman? Are there areas off campus where lots of students live and are in a safer area?

I wish I wasn’t so concerned about the safety. We haven’t visited (we are a long way away). Maybe visiting would alleviate some of my concerns.

@Mom2aphysicsgeek I am a freshman at Temple. I feel safe there, but I also use good judgment. I don’t walk alone at night, etc. It’s fine. There are walking escorts, there is Flight, which works like Uber and provides door to door transportation, even to a perimeter off campus. Most upper classmen do live off campus. There are definitely safer areas than others where a lot of students live, and are within Temples patrol area. If off campus makes you nervous, the good news is honors students get guaranteed housing all 4 years. I saw on another thread your daughter got into honors, so she would not need to live off campus if u don’t want her to. I am also in Honors.

I want to tell you I have read some of your other threads and like your daughter I really had to look for merit. I got into more prestigious schools and had tough choices to make . I have not regretted my decision for one minute and I cannot even express to you how much I love this school!! I am challeged, have great professors, there are endless opportunities and I have made so many great friends. You REALLY need to visit to get a feel for the school. I hope you do.

@jnkam24 Thank you so much for your reply. Temple offers everything she is looking for. I wanted her to remove it from her list, but she wants to keep all her options open. Your post makes me appreciate her position. If she receives a scholarship, we will visit.

@Mom2aphysicsgeek I completely understand your trepidation about sending your dd to Temple. I might have had reservations myself if this incident happened last year before she arrived on campus. However, as @jnkam24 says, my dd absolutely loves Temple and feels safe there. At the same time, she practices good “street smarts” which makes me feel reassured about her being there.

She’s home for fall break and just can’t stop telling us how happy she is with the school, her classes, her new friends, etc. For me, I feel that as a city-based campus, Temple is probably one of the most proactive. We toured several other schools (in Philly, NYC, and Richmond) and Temple was definitely superior as far as safety measures they have in place.

As far as off-campus housing goes, many upperclassman do live off-campus, but the Temple police have a patrol area that most housing/apartments are located within. Here is the link: http://safety.temple.edu/operations-programs/main-campus-patrol-map

I hope she gets merit aid and that you can visit the campus. The accepted student day was what convinced her the school was for her.

Best of luck!

It is so great to hear that your daughter is comfortable with the safety on campus. We visited and I was very impressed with everything they said about it as well. Can I ask, are there dorms that are better located as far as safety that would be recommended. Is your daughter happy with her dorm selection and location??? @veehee @jnkam24

@shelleyr25 in my opinion all of the dorms are equally safe. White Hall is on the outskirts of campus and the other side of Broad, so it would not be my first choice but more for convenience reasons. I love my dorm. The building is very nice and conveniently located to everything I need.

@jnkam24 thank you for your input! I was really hoping that she got into the Honors program but so far there is nothing on her portal and there was nothing in her admittance package :frowning: I think she would benefit from being in the honors housing…hopefully something will update and she will be put into it.

@shelleyr25 I would agree that all the dorms are located in safer areas but White Hall is a little bit further away. My D is in Peabody and is part of the Tyler LLC which is housed there. She is fine with it but would have preferred a dorm with a kitchenette like Morgan Hall. It’s pricier though and it wasn’t available when she was choosing housing.

I will say housing fills up quickly and if she wasn’t in the LLC she would have had trouble getting on campus housing because she waited until May to decide. Freshman aren’t guaranteed housing which I find a little harsh.

Thank you @veehee I had hoped she would be chosen for Honors- which so far she has not been- so would be able to be in the Honors housing in 1300. Her major is Speech Pathology and I do not think there is an LLC for it (at least not that I have found). Although I see that there is now a Greek Life LLC at 1300 also so maybe she will choose that one. I am hoping that scholarship information will come soon so that she can make a decision. I know from experience at my son’s school that the early bird gets the worm as far as housing goes. I don’t want her to wait too long and have limited choices. I believe she would avoid White Hall from what you guys are saying about the location.

Our son is in White Hall and hasn’t felt unsafe. According to him his fellow students are being careful, but aren’t losing sleep.

@shelleyr25 there are her LLCs that are not based on majors so be sure to check those out as well. I honestly haven’t heard anything bad about White Hall, it’s just farther away than the others.

Hope she hears soon! I know the scholarship money made Temple affordable (relatively speaking) compared to even our in-state schools.
