Safety in Rochester

Hey guys! So I've heard conflicting opinions on the general safeness of the city of Rochester. Now I'm not passing judgments, and I know that all cities are unsafe to some degree, but I would just like to hear some opinions on what the city is like.

I am applying for the Dual Degree program and I've already been accepted to Eastman, which prompts my question. Thanks!

My son graduated from Eastman in 2006. He lived in the dorm his first 3 years and rented an apartment a couple blocks away from the dorm during his senior year. The immediate area of the school is pretty safe. The dorm and class room buildings are right across the street from each other. The dorm is very secure as long as students follow the basic rules.

The area around Eastman can be a bit sketchy. You don't want to go places alone, especially after dark. Son never had any problems. He had a few friends who had a couple of issues but nothing major. Campus police are very responsive, even for students living off campus.

River Campus is as safe as any other urban campus. It is pretty self contained and bordered by a large cemetary, the river and the medical school complex. There is a low income housing project at one end of campus but there is a resonably large buffer between the 2 and I don't think it is much of an issue.

When you start school, campus security will spend time with incoming freshman telling you all about the area and how to stay safe. They will tell you which areas of the city to avoid and which areas are relatively OK.

The area around the U of R is not bad, I've been there countless times, even at night and I don't feel unsafe. However, like most cities, Rochester does have its bad parts but those aren't that close to campus. It's a nice city though.

Agree with shennie. The river campus is very hemmed in by cemetery, river, med. center.

the surrounding area of UoR is very safe, even going out a few miles in each direction. i go to school just a mile down the road from UoR and i am constantly running nearby the campus, cemetary, park.

the town that UoR in is one of the nicest in Rochester, safe too.
the city at night can get pretty bad so i would stay clear, the downtown area is usually safe tho.

uhhhhh

i don't know where you guys have been. but just this year, there was about 4 muggings and 2 attempted mugging ON CAMPUS. not out on the fringes of the ground, it was right in the middle of campus!

Rochester is a good city? haha

go to the GreyHound bus station, it's full of homeless druggies and across the river is where the getto is. God, did admissions pay you to tell this crap about how rochester is so safe? all u parents, u don't live here and u think just cus there's cemetery and a river and bla bla bla, it must be so safe.

Livedifferent, I just noticed your first post--you have already been accepted to Eastman?? What instrument, if you don't mind telling. We, too are waiting on dual degree, but have heard nothing from either.

soyeahiknow - there is crime on every college campus. If safety is a concern, you have to look at long term trends. People were killed at VT and NIU recently, but I don't know if that means that either campus is any less safe than it was 3 years ago. Overall, UR is a reasonably safe campus for being in an urban area.

And there are homeless people at most urban Greyhound stations.

soyeahiknow--

You mock those who feel safe at UR, you hate the city, you hate the food (another thread), you just don't seem happy!

Have you considered another school where you might be happier?

Some folks on this board, such as Chedva, myself, and many others have children who are very pleased with UR.

I don't think anyone one is holding you at UR against your will.

Rochester has a very high rate of violence, but you just have to know where to go. Some parts of the city are absolutely gorgeous, and others are fine if you're not there at night.
My brother goes to Eastman and he was mugged (but it was off-campus I think). Just don't be stupid... also, watch out for the janitors at Eastman. They've been rumored to steal stuff from practice rooms. I'm serious.

Thanks guys! I just visited both the Eastman and River campuses, and I felt no more unsafe than in D.C. (where I'm from), but thanks for all the advice!

cjm--Voice (Baritone)

pretty much all of the violence is gang violence as far as the news says.
just stay out of the bad parts of the city and you will be fine.
