Safety of Area around Case: H concerns

We will be visiting Case in early April (driving trip), and will likely stay in the Beachwood area.

My H is a bit of a scaredy-cat when it comes to big cities, and has a very low tolerance for considering schools that he perceives in a bad neighborhood. (Even though where we went to school has some sketchy areas a few blocks away. But that was us. This is his daughter we're talking about!)

Anyway, I wanted to know ... is there a way of coming into Case that will avoid those areas? I don't want to be unrealistic, but I don't need to give him fuel to cross the school off D's list for her. And if there are two ways of approaching it, one that's better and one that's worse ... well, might as well pick the better.

(It's like going to Northwestern. Approach it from the south and you would think - oh wow, right next to a vibrant downtown. Approach it from the north and you would think - oh wow, it's right next to lakefront mansions. Approach it from the west and you want to make sure your doors are locked.)

Come in from the East (from the I-271 highway). The worse areas around Case (IMHO) are to the West and NW. Although S and SW is also not that great…IMHO. It is an urban college and if your husband has a very low tolerance for considering schools that he perceives are in bad neighborhoods…he will find things to not like about CWRU.

OK, I hate to be dumb here, but looking at a map, it looks like this I-271 runs north and south, not into Case. If I’m staying in Beachwood, what specific route would you recommend to give the best impression? (I’m assuming Beachwood is simply a nice suburb?)

From the Visit Case website:

“Stay north on I-271 then exit at Cedar Road (sharp right turn off exit ramp). Follow Cedar Road westbound toward Cleveland. (Case is about 20-25 minutes from this point.) Where Cedar starts down a steep hill, look for a sign identifying Case Western Reserve University on your right at the corner of Murray Hill Road. Continue down Cedar Road under the bridge and veer to the right at the next light on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Turn right onto Euclid and watch for the Information Booth at the right”

Coming from Beechwood you could drive N on Richmond and make a L onto Cedar. Not the shortest route but a possibility.

Thanks. I’ve never been to Cleveland before, so I don’t have a good sense of the area.

You’re welcome and good luck with your husband. What is your daughter going to study?

I realize this a couple days old, but here’s what I have found while in the area…

By all means, take him on Mayfield Rd, not Cedar, to Warrensville Center Rd. Cedar has miles of vacant shopping centers in the area bypassed, and is a little trashy. Mayfield has the beautiful (and suburbanite-pleasing ;)) Severance Towne Center, site of the former Severance Mall (don’t mention that ;)), and it contains a few restraunts, a Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Cinema, Borders, and a lot of other nice stuff. Nice housing is across the street, as this area has historically been a center of Cleveland’s wealth, and Warrensville Center Rd. is at the intersection.

Then, go a mile or two south to Cedar.

Going this way, you’ll also run into the urban 'burb of University Heights, which is really nice and has such cool features as a Target with a parking garage. John Carroll U is also nearby, thus the city name. Then, it’s a straight shot on Cedar into Beachwood (a great choice, with the Luxury Mall, lifestyle center and general poshness).

Anyways, at the very least your dad will feel safe, and hopefully happy as well, because you are “surrounded” by very affluent areas at Case. Talk the deal over with your parents while dining on a ginormous piece of cheesecake at Lyndhurst Village’s Cheesecake Factory, and most likely all will be good :)

It’s an urban campus. S1 graduated last year from CWRU. Safety is knowing when and where you can go alone.

The campus is beautiful as is University Circle. You can’t judge the campus safety by the area you drive through to get there. There is blight in all directions from the campus, but the campus is something very nice to see.

Go in w/an open mind that the drive is not the campus…

The Mom- Just curious, in what part of the country did your son grow up? We are from Colorado, just outside of Denver and I am wondering how big of an adjustment going to Case would be for my son. We do plan to visit, but I just am not sure how he will like the area.

C’mom, will pm you my response.
