Safety School and Match List. Much Appreciated!

Hello, this is my second post here. I apologize for the other one, it was posted in the wrong section.

Thank you all in advance for taking the time to read this

Need a list of relative "safety" schools. And "match" schools if you know of any. I plan on majoring in Electrical, Mechanical, or Biomedical engineering. I am a senior at a top ranked public school.

4.2w/3.9uw 10-12 GPA
4.0w/3.83uw overall

SAT: 1950 ( 610 r, 670 m, 670 w) took once
ACT: October 27th, 2013

EC's are pretty strong. Varsity Athlete. Recruited by D1, but suffered injuries that may prevent me from playing (currently in rehab). Leader/Member of a couple religious and community service clubs. Have a killer essay (about the injuries).

Member of CSF for 4 years
San Diego Resident
Ethnicity: Philippino

Received an A, or will Receive an A, in all of these classes:

AP Physics B
AP Physics C
Honors Pre-Calc/Calc A
AP Psychology
AP Computer Science

Thank you

Cost constraints? You need to run the net price calculators on all schools to make sure that they are affordable on need-based financial aid. Otherwise, the reach/match/safety assessment must be based on getting a large enough merit scholarship to be able to afford to attend.

For admission only, you are probably looking at:

Reaches: UCB, UCLA, UCSD
Mid-to-high matches: UCSB, UCD, UCI, CPSLO
Low matches: UCSC, UCR
Near-safeties: most CSUs other than CPSLO and maybe CSULB and SDSU (“near” because there is no stated automatic admission threshold for impacted campuses, though it is hard to believe that someone with your stats will not get in)
Safeties: community college or schools with stated automatic admission or scholarship thresholds which your stats meet, such as those with http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/1348012-automatic-full-tuition-full-ride-scholarships-19.html#post16145676

Thank you for the reply!
I am blessed to have no cost restraints. In fact, NYU is on my list.

I did notice that the list included all California schools. Is it typical to have safety schools be in-state? I am willing to look outside of California, if there are any options.

Also, I noticed you said admission only. I’m assuming the reach/match is not for admission into an engineering major. Is there a site where I can compare my stats with the acceptance stats for specific majors?

I listed California public schools because you are a California resident, and it is typical for California residents to have a lot of them in their application lists. You did not mention any other preferences for schools. Many students choose in-state public schools for safeties, due to (a) somewhat more predictable admissions than for private schools or out-of-state schools, (b) lower list price.

“Admission only” means without the financial constraints. If you and your parents can afford any school (>$60,000 per year for the most expensive private schools like NYU and USC), then you need only consider admission reach/match/safety, rather than having to include cost in the reach/match/safety assessement. But yes, some schools are more selective for engineering than other majors. Unfortunately, except for SJSU, and UCLA for transfer students, differences in selectivity by major are hard to determine (other than the designation of “impacted” or “not impacted” for majors).

NYU proper does not have any engineering. However, PINYU does, and is being merged into NYU to become NYU’s engineering division. Historically, PINYU has been less selective than NYU, but has had better financial aid, but that may change.

There are many other options for engineering. You can look up general lists of engineering schools at [Accredited Program Search](http://main.abet.org/aps/AccreditedProgramSearch.aspx/AccreditationSearch.aspx) . Many of the best known schools for engineering are flagship public universities in places like midwest states and Texas. Do you have any preference for big or small schools or location etc.?

“Accredited Program Search”

Thank you for this link! Very helpful. Disappointing to hear that I cannot look at acceptance into specific majors, though.

I have preference for schools with >Small populations (more than 1,000 atleast). I’d prefer city schools, or ones within 10-15 minutes of a large city. The reason for this is mainly for a nice music scene and diverse culture. I am not interested in playing music, I just really enjoy concerts/music venues. For this reason, some other schools which have made their way on to my list are:

UT Austin
U Washington

However, I would not consider these “safety” schools. In fact, they may be even be reaches for their engineering programs given my relatively low SAT Math score. I only hope my strong essay and EC’s can compensate

PINYU is probably a low match, since your scores are in its middle 50% range, while your unweighted GPA is in the top 28%.
[Polytechnic Institute of New York University Admissions Information - CollegeData College Profile](http://www.collegedata.com/cs/data/college/college_pg02_tmpl.jhtml?schoolId=102)

UT Austin is probably a reach for anyone not in the top 7% of their high school class as a Texas resident. UT Austin uses class rank instead of GPA for admissions.

Purdue, U Cincinnati, U Dayton.

Im also taking the math 2 subj test to compensate for the low sat1 math score. If I receive a good score, could this alter the list of safeties/match?
