Safety Schools for Comp Sci major?

Good luck to your son.

If he ends up applying at NC State, do it EA. They are limited to 17% OOS students (couple years ago they were actually at 12%) so EA helps. They also do an accepted engineering student day for EA’S in February that was very good. Small group of potential students with 1 NC State student romping around campus for a day sans parents…really got a feel for the school

Clemson should not be considered a safety either with his GPA. His test score is good, but Clemson wants all four of high class rank, high GPA, high test scores and course rigor.

I’m not familiar with the USC (South Carolina) CS department, but you could check that out as an option.

Try looking into UIUC and Pitt

UIUC is unlikely to be a safety for the CS major.

CS has gotten so popular in the last few years, that many programs are not a safety these days.

I wouldn’t consider any of your listed universities as safeties * for CS*.
Look into Marist honors, UMBC honors, UVermont Honors.
Perhaps Penn State if you apply by November 30 and apply to IST (where data science is).

@STF4717 In addition to UMBC, Towson also has Computer Science in your state.

Thanks. Clemson accepts EVERYONE from our high school.

@kellymc25, but UIUC is too far away. Pitt was not a hit- too much city going through it.

@MYOS1634 Thank you! We had crossed Marist off the list but just realized they give a 255 tuition discount for military dependents…it’s back on the list!

I am wondering about UMass Lowell as a safety. I agree with other posts that UVM is a good choice, but I don’t think that it is a safety in this case. UMass Amherst is another good choice, but would not be a safety.

Wrt Clemson, goal should be Calhoun Honors, but Clemson could be a safety while Calhoun would be a target - if, indeed, “all” get in (guessing you mean “all top10% ranked students” or “all top 20% who apply”).

Regarding UVM Honors.

Based on the last two years of admissions at Clemson, many people who considered it a “safety” were shocked and disappointed when they weren’t admitted . It may be helpful to look at last year’s threads to see what kinds of kids were waitlisted, rejected , deferred or bridged . You may be surprised .

Towson u should be his safety.

@artloversplus Yep, Towson is on the list too - but kiddo did NOT like it.

Anybody have opinions on Miami University Ohio -or- Ohio University?

Both are very good, with a more competitive/preprofessional vibe at MiamiOH and a more laid back/collaborative vibe at OU.

Marist has the good proximity to IBM in Poughkeepsie that can be helpful as well for CS students.

@MYOS1634 Thank you! That’s the kind of info I need! He loved Ohio State, but we need safety options…

@HazeGrey Thank you…I didn’t realize IBM was there. We’re going to visit!
