safety schools for dartmouth applicants?

That is absolutely the most hilarious post I have ever read on this entire website.

This is a joke right?

She got in @ UChicago.

Mine were Bryn Mawr, Wellesley, and Macalester; since I was considered international, I didn't have an in-state safety (and besides, the University of the District of Columbia is hardly anything to get excited about). I was waitlisted at Amherst, Williams, Swarthmore, and Middlebury. The University of Chicago, which rejected me, told my counselor that I would have been admitted had I not applied for financial aid.

Oh, and my username is very obvious if you know where to look, which is a bit uncomfortable (in retrospect, I really wish I'd chosen something more anonymous). I hope I haven't said anything too incriminating! :o

Cameliasinesis: Dont worry. You have been wonderful on CC! :)

Macalester was your safety?! (Is it just me or people here have 'wonderful' safeties?)

It was the closest to a safety I had. As an international student needing significant financial aid, I really couldn't count on being admitted to any American college.

My last-resort safety would have been the University of Uppsala in Sweden (a very good school, but I hoped to stay on this side of the Atlantic), which accepts applications until mid-April. After getting into Dartmouth on March 30, I didn't bother applying. :D

Duke is a safety for a lot of Dartmouth applicants..

Go safety school! I guess it's a pretty attractive safety if so many people choose Duke over Dartmouth.. I know.. crazy stuff, I wouldn't have done it myself. :p!

I was surprised to hear that so many students end up choosing between Dartmouth and Duke, actually. I hated Duke and didn't apply -- it's a great school, just not my personal preference.

i was turned off by the whole lax thing.

Dartmouth and Duke are both places where the future genius alcoholics of America attend.. :p!
Basically saying that both schools have strong Greek scene and excellent academics (also these two schools have consistently held higher SAT averages than their equally selective peers).. though there are many ways these two schools are different. I would imagine that Dartmouth is less jocky than Duke.

I refuse to acknowledge Duke as a true Greek school. It's not really a Southern school, but a Northern one that pretends to be a Southern Greek powerhouse with its gel-headed, Abercrombie & Fitch wearing, freshman douchebags all trying to rush into the fraternity scene. Plus, acts of douchebaggery run rampant throughout the city of Durham, such as liberal hippies all trying to protest the core values that I find ever so important to me: the slaying of cows for meat, and the concentration of power and wealth.

Also, Duke basketball sucks.

That said, Dartmouth isn't really that great either. But we're still less douchier than you guys at Duke.

How about Dickinson? It's more of a safety than many of the other schools mentioned so far.

Big Brother 1984: Just curious.. have you ever visited Duke or are you basing this on stereotypes you have heard from the media/people on College Confidential?

I'm actually kind of pressed to say that many Duke students fit this description.. but on the other hand.. what college or university doesn't have people like that (even those who don't have a Greek system.. people with that sort of personality and desire for social status do exist for sure.. otherwise high school movies about 'mean and popular kids' wouldn't exist.)? I know that the question here is whether Duke has a greater population of this type of person or not.. this is a question I cannot answer.

Au contraire, the stereotypes on CC dictate Duke as some social hierarchy of frat boys backed by a sea of superficial, appearance-obsessed female gold diggers obsessed with preparing themselves for the future as housewives. I have never visited Duke, nor will I ever dare step foot into the Raleigh-Durham area. However, I have plenty of friends there and anyone who has an iota of knowledge about Greek life in an SEC or Southeast based school will know that Duke...is anything but frat.

I was sorely disappointed to see a Facebook group of Duke fratdaddies all dressed up in Armani Exchange (read: douche) attire with hair gelled up to the rim like it was Christmas in Milan. Even worse, all of those stereotypes on CC about Duke aren't true.

An irrelevant question fellow fratling. Dartmouth has fewer people on campus, so the question that we should really be asking is: which school frats harder? I'll be frank here, us Dartmouth students have had our fair share of blunders such as the high ranking SAE participating in a game of ultimate frisbee, or the few men of some frat at the end of the row sporting their leather jackets like...they think they're in a biker gang or something. And no, it was not a dress-up event where wearing a leather jacket could actually be pretty cool, and yes, these were my observations after only having been to the campus for a few days. I shudder to think of the kinds douchebaggery the media keeps trying to feed America.

Oops.. I meant percentage of students, haha.
I know that a greater percentage of Dartmouth students are in frats than those at Duke.. but whether these frats are more nerdier than Duke frats (and thus less of the gelled-preppy stereotype).. I cannot answer, since I never visited Dartmouth. Actually something I really regret.. was going to visit if I didn't get into Duke ED.
The stereotype you stated about Duke though is definitely false.
However, I must say that while I may not join a frat.. I don't know when I'm going to get bored of attending their parties.. except for the fact that most of the parties only serve light.

More nerdier = fewer gel-headed preps? No dude. Gel-headed = douche.

I still contend that Dartmouth is simply frattier than Duke. Of course we're not the typical LSU or UGA-like SEC school - the standard where all other Greek-based schools are judged upon, but we're still the best out of any elite-25 institution except for Vanderbilt and possibly a couple others I've missed (not Emory though, dear God not Emory). If there's any doubt in your mind, then observe Duke fans during gameday and you will notice an unhealthy level of douchebaggery running through them.

Glad to see that you're partying hard at Duke. Light's the usual substance to pass on the fratism to large numbers of people, so don't fret. Just stay away from the douchebags serving Smirnoff or Mike's Hard.

I think Big Brother is in love with the word 'douche'

Haha! The 'douchebaggery' is from the fact that Duke can kick ass and we know it! :D

Just like in last week's game with Connecticut?

That's not a game.. that is disaster. When basketball season comes around.. then you'll see 'awesome doucheness' during gameday.. since we know we'll win all (I mean most.. I mean I don't know what's going to happen) the time... :p

The only thing I'll see is Duke failing to make it past the Sweet 16 once again.
