Hey guys. I’m looking for safety schools that are affordable (able to grant a sizable amount of financial aid) and have a good science program.
I currently have a 3.73 gpa and 2160 sat scores. If you guys could point out some colleges that fit that picture, that would be great!
Schools able to grade sizeable amount of financial aid may not necessarily grant it to you. Check each school’s net price calculator.
You can also look to see if any automatic merit scholarship schools are affordable:

What is your situation?
Are you low income?
do you have a NCP?
What is your major and career goal?
How much can your family pay towards college?
If you tell us your reaches and matches, we might be able to suggest safeties that are comparable.
I have a pretty big list right now. I haven’t really set up each one as match or reach but here’s the list.
Amherst, Brandeis, Cornell, Dartmouth, Emory, George Washington, Georgetown, Haverford, Hood, UMass Amherst, Mcgill, Middlebury, Upenn, Princeton(Not sure), UToronto, Trinity, Vanderbilt, UVM, Wesleyan, and Williams.
I know all the ivies are definitely reaches and I will most likely only end up applying to 1, but I think Williams, Amherst, Middlebury, Tufts, etc are probably reaches too.
@mom2collegekids We’re not low income, but we’re a family of 7 and don’t have a lot of money. It’s one income. So they can’t pay a lot. I will also have a sister going to Concordia this upcoming fall. I’m not clear on a major, but I know I want it to be in either biology or chemistry.
Muhlenberg, St. Lawrence and Providence Honors Program. These three have very good merit for high stats.
What state do you live in?
I live in Vermont
@BatesParent2019 Thanks. But do you know how strong their biology/chemistry departments are? Also when I calculated the net price for St. Lawrence it was a hefty 28,000/year I’m looking more in the 18,000-22,000 range.
With your gpa and sat score, University of Alabama you would get a completely free tuition. I know Alabama isn’t the most appealing school but if you are looking for a cheap school, that could be the answer.
lyndon state college, it’s 20,000.
Fordham has good merit aid for high stats.

How much are your parents paying for that? How are other costs getting covered? Any loans?
Not sure. At the moment I’m just trying to find safety schools that will give me a decent amount of money and have a good science program.
@GAGM11 The schools I mentioned have merit and need aid. Merit aid is not in the calculators.
Providence goes all the way to a free ride as does St. Lawrence.
This is something you need to discuss with admissions.
The best need aid will not come from safety schools, rather the very selective, which you have the stats to get in.
Run the calculator on Middlebury.
@BatesParents2019 Oh okay, I didn’t realize that. Middlebury is 21,000 with about a 40,000 grant.
@GAGM11 Make sure when you run the calculator you do not include your parents IRA, 401k, 403b or any other retirement assets in the lines for cash or other investments.
I don’t
You could also get some work study from a school like Middlebury.
Holy Cross is exceptional for science and meets 100% need. That is another great option.
