UPenn is SUCH an amazing school, and I think I'd really love it there, but the one thing that concerns me is the safety and the area....I've heard different things about it. Is the surrounding area nice/safe?

the penn campus itself is very safe...security guards and blue light poles everywhere. immediately outside of the campus, the are is fairly nice and it is being built up. however, when i visited, i drove out of west philly and about 5-10 blocks outside of Penn is not a nice neighborhood. i don't see why you would go out that way, but penn is very safe. immediate area is safe as well. 5-10 blocks out to the west, it gets kinda sketchy.

Penn's campus is pretty safe; it's the safest area in all of Philly. I don't personally know anyone who's ever been harrassed/mugged/assaulted/shot/murdered. Just be smart and you should be safe for your four years here.

I wouldn't go as far as saying "very safe"...as far as colleges go...You just have to be more vigilant to avoid crime and keep yourself (and your possessions safe). You actually have to consider it, rather than taking safety for granted like you can at some schools.
I think that's the fairest way to look at things. Penn is not Kansas.

you can die/get hurt anywhere in the world... don't go out of your way to jeopardize your life, and you should be fine...

use common sense wherever you go, whenever you're there; that goes for any place, not just penn.

as far as location, west philly is fine from the edge of campus west until 48th street - but in most cases you won't be going that far on foot.

I heard that someone got stabbed/mugged right on Walnut street.. I'm going to Penn next year with my Marc Jacobs purse trotting in Kate Spades.. I am really worried after hearing students getting assaulted even on Locust Walk.. IS it really that bad?? Do you feel safe walking at night from the library to your dorm??

I've never felt unsafe and even done some stupid things as far as walking alone intoxicated late at night as a girl. However, I wouldn't recommend that. Overall I'd say you will be fine as long as you take necessary (and obvious) precautions: walk in groups after dark, call the escort service, etc.

"I'm going to Penn next year with my Marc Jacobs purse trotting in Kate Spades.."

I actually LOLed XD

come on now yaw gotta do better than this...its philly, you not gone get shot on sight lol...most people dont just shoot on sight.....most need a reason...you **** wit me...i **** wit u...dont **** wit nobody... you be fine...just be happy you got in, damn.

In 5 years at Penn I was never mugged, assaulted, robbed, etc and didn't have a single friend who had been either. The problem is that when 1 person gets mugged out of sheer bad luck and occasional stupidity and the other 39,999 people in the area don't, the latter aren't really newsworthy.

I'm not trying to say that crime is some specious lie foisted on us by evil newsmedia. Penn's neighborhood does have a crime. It has more crime than Princeton. But it should not be a deterrent to anyone.
