Tc, try again to convince your family. I believe that if you can do that, most of the problems that debilitate your academic possibilities will dissapear. For example, if you can convince them that art related careers don’t enjoy seldom employment opportunities and that the fact that possession of a degree matters more than what one majored in, I’m certain that you could persuade them. another angle you could go after
Is that, for the most, all non proffessons related occupations (humanities, social sciences, hard sciences, liberal studies etc) are in the exact same position as art majors. Even then, the legal progression is outright saturated/even more competitive than art careers, Engineering/computer science is becoming increasingly outsourced and the medical progression seldom resembles the image the public has of it. Convince them that studying what your passionate about increases your chances for success. employers value critical thinking and a consistent work ethic which is certainly cross disciplinary. If you have to present them with sources and stastics. There are plenty online.

Also, I was wondering, have you considered the 4+2 architectural studies program. Basically you get a BA in architectural studies, which is - I recall - a history of architecture/architectural theory program and then a two year masters program that qualifies you to be an architect. It has a heavy art history component but it also promises a proffessional - licensed - career as well. If your interested in it it could be a reasonable compromise with your parents. You not only get to study your interests but you also become a licensed proffessional as well, not to mention you would be in possession of a terminal degree which also increases your employment opportunities.

I am not interested in architecture at all. I was for a brief period, but only because I was told I couldn’t make any money as an artist. Today, I went to an interview with one of the art history teachers at a local university. She recommended the following colleges for art history:

Williams
UCLA
UofC
WUSTL

I’ve already looked into Williams, but none of the others. What are some of the differences between the programs at these colleges?

Good for you!! First thing you want to do is go to the school sites and read up on the major so YOU can begin to form an opinion of what you are looking for. Next, does the size and location of the school matter to you? Over the next 6 months, you will add and subtract from your list as your criteria becomes more defined.

WUSTL is $60/yr in tuition room and other costs. That is one hefty scholarship if that is what you will be relying on without grandfather’s help. Keep these realities in mind as you do your search.

Tv you should know, if your to be majoring in art history a GREAT portion of your classes will be devoted to architecture. Your going to be looking at schematics and studying the components of building structures from various cultures. In fact, the vast majority of everything youll study from archaic greece to the beginning of the rennaissance will be architecture. You’ll also likely have classes devoted to very specific types of buildings at that. For example, I know someone who had a class devoted only to gothic cathedral architecture.

I thought that since you were going to major in art history you had a great interest in architecture. But if you really have zero interest in architecture, you should be prepared to encounter a lot of it. I really can’t stress enough how HUGE architecture is in art history.

you are right to worry about OP
we all do here.
but it is up to which school or what course taught by whom.
for example, at most art schools and LACs you can pick classes in 100s, 200s, so forth from range of offerings. there might be prerequisite 100s that happened to be done by Roman column fetish but it is not entire whole semester length of lecture looking at different columns. you need, however have to learn how to identify Roman one from Greek one. It will be tedious buy hey, OP seems up to it.

Let me rephrase. I am interested in architecture. I am not interested in being an architect.

Yeah, you may be right. I honestly don’t think there’s any way to significantly avoid architecture - as much of the history of art in the ancient world is devoted to it - but surely it’s possible to maneuver through courses to avoid the subject as much as possoble at universities that offer a bit more options in AH courses. Plus the TC seems smart enough that I really don’t imagine this person encountering much difficulty.

It’s just that TC saying she has no interest in architecture - with the intent to go into art history - set of the kind of alert you’d get if someone said they had little interest in biology but wanted to study to become an MD.

Same time post (never have that happen before). Then yeah, you should definitely be fine.

OP - Glad you are proactively looking for ways to supplement your education. One thing I don’t get is why you want art history and painting. Generally in the visual arts forum, the students writing for advice have a passion that is obvious through their posts. I apologize if I have overlooked it, but I don’t see your passion. You considered art history because a teacher thought you would be good at it. Do you have a vision of what you want to do after college? I am very open to being corrected, and through your posts I see a person interested in a liberal arts degree with an art minor. Do you see it differently?

did you subscribe yet, OP?
now things are looking up!! more fun works

It is not that often same local museum shows up in good mid-section of the newsletter only few days apart.
This means either

 1. museum is loaded and paying it up
 2. they really like and respect the institution
 3. or the artists they are showing
 4. serious typo, why is that artwork shown and the article don’t match?
 5. some strange bias I don’t know about, like, new editor in chief is SMU alum, or from Dallas

there is some bias going on, def
