Saint Joseph’s University Class of 2023 EA/RD Applicant Thread

Has anyone heard anything about the Dean’s scholarship or the McNulty scholarship?

Accepted - Presidential Scholarship, Legacy Award, Honors Program, and invited to Scholars Weekend to interview for the John P McNulty Scholars Program. 1390 SAT, 4.1 GPA

@cka4114 When did you hear about the McNulty? I thought letters weren’t going out for the Scholars Weekend until Next Friday? Did you get a letter and if so when? (and congratulations)

Son received an email that he is a finalist for the Dean’s scholarship Friday evening. We were surprised and elated to that son will be considered further. Frankly, even to make it to the finalist round is pretty exciting! Anyone on here have some advice about what the interview might entail and if there is anything the kids can do to prepare? It will be a good learning experience no matter what happens. And, if nothing else, we are grateful for another opportunity to visit campus and meet some kids and the administration and learn more about this school - all worth while since we live thousands of miles away. Good luck to all –
congrats to you too - cka4114!

I have the same questions as 345winter. My daughter was also invited to the Dean’s scholarship weekend. We’re going to another one this weekend but they seem different.

Hi ^ ^ very late to this discussion as an EA applicant, but I’ve been accepted to St. Joe’s and the Honors Program as a psychology major.

In case this would help anyone -

My financial aid turned out to be this:

GRANTS AND SCHOLARSHIPS TOTAL: $43,582
$22,500 - Presidential Scholarship
$14,100 - Regis Grant
$2,500 - United Scholars Grant
$1,500 - Drexel Work Study
$2,982 - PHEAA

LOANS TOTAL: $5,500
$3,500 - Subsidized Direct
$2,000 - Unsubsidized Direct

and these were my stats at the time of my admission:

SAT: 1560
SAT Bio E: 730
SAT Math II: 760
AP English Lang & Comp: 5
AP Bio: 5
AP Physics: 4
Weighted GPA: 4.2296

it seems like I can’t edit my post, but I also want to mention that I did not move on to the finalist stage for receiving the Dean’s Scholarship - my suspicion is that it’s because 1. outside of National Honor Society, I’ve got basically no volunteering under my belt, and 2. I’ve never really held a concrete leadership position

Returned from a really lovely scholarship weekend with DS. Met fantastic kids and families and felt so welcome on the beautiful St. Joes’ campus. And we were incredibly grateful, lucky beyond any expectations to have DS be awarded the Dean’s Scholarship for full tuition, four years, and a summer stipend to do a research/writing project one summer while he is a student at SJU. We can’t quite grasp that we are not paying college tuition - after years of planning and worrying about it! If any of the other scholarship candidates/winners are on line and read this - please reply or PM me. We would love to be in touch.

@345winter Congratulations to your son! What a fantastic opportunity! He will love SJU. My daughter is a freshman and absolutely loves it.

@345winter! Congrats - that is wonderful.

accepted presidential scholarship honors program

@345winter @CAF1 Hi, I just read your posts from last year at acceptance time. Are your kids still happy at St. Joseph’s? Were their scholarships renewed at the same value? I read that SJU has a bad rep for decreasing merit aid. Thanks for any info.

My daughter received the University merit scholarship and the Regis grant. I was heard that the Regis grant is automatically renewed starting this year regardless of EFC. Did anyone else hear the same ? Thanks…

My son will be a freshman in the fall of 2019 1stTimeThru mom - so he is not a current student. I was reviewing the letter we got for the Dean’s Scholarship and the on-line portal with our costs and it says that the scholarships are for all 4 years, provided that the GPA minimum is met. No other conditions are stated. So no - they don’t try to re-negotiate each year on a merit award from what I can tell. Neither have I heard that Saint Joe’s has a reputation for doing that- most award letters we have received from a variety of universities where son got $ were quite clear that the awards were for 4 years, and with GPA minimums to keep the awards. To try to reduce an award which is offered (and accepted) for 4 years would legally speaking be a breach of contract - so I don’t believe any accredited school would try to do that. Obviously, financial aid, need based aid, would differ from year to year depending on finances, but I don’t think that is what you are asking about.

@345winter Thank you for all the info and congrats to your son! Would you mind sharing the names of other schools that were generous with merit aid?

University of Delaware, Fordham, Marist, Temple, University of Denver and University of South Carolina all have been generous with merit aid. Good luck - cast a wide net - there are plenty of great schools with good merit to choose from. We are very with happy son’s results - he is very excited to be attending Saint Joe’s this fall.

@1stTimeThruMom Hello! Yes, my daughter is absolutely loving life at SJU! I’ve honestly never heard of a reduction in merit aid unless a student’s GPA falls below the stated requirement. Please let me know if you have any other questions. ~Christine :-). #thwnd

So happy to hear that renewal of grant aid is no longer an issue. There is another thread confirming this as well. Congrats to all!

By any chance, can anyone tell me amount the legacy award? Thank you~

Did the money post in the portal
