Sam Houston State University

Hello, having a hard time finding posts about Sam Houston State University. I would love to hear any positives or negatives about attending Sam. Are the professors good? How is the social scene? Someone told me that in the past it was a school where most students left to go home for the weekend. Is that still true? Any information appreciated!

If I were you, I wouldn’t choose SHSU. I recently had a campus tour there and the atmosphere was below average.
No friendly nice faces, nothing. Even the residence life gave me an attitude for no good reason. The school is known for being the school that most high school counselors recommend the student ed students to go to. Also, that most students do in fact leave on the weekend. Yes, in fact the campus is truly beautiful with flowers everywhere and big bright beautiful buildings, but the vibe isn’t there. They also only seem to cater to the freshmen students and not transfers.

Don’t just take my word for it, go on a campus tour yourself to see.

Personally I’ve heard good things about SHSU. Since its pretty far from most major cities I’ve heard of it to be residential. They also have a solid football team in FCS that always a contender. Seems they have a strong greek community too

Picking a college is such a personal choice and what appeals to one person may not appeal to another. Last year we took visits to Sam Houston, UNT, UofH, UTSA, Texas State and Stephen F Austin. My son decided Texas State was for him while his best friend decided Sam Houston was the place he wanted to go. Sam Houston has a vibrant campus. It’s a hour from downtown Houston and you do have alot of kids who go home on the weekends (large population of kids are from Houston). I found it to be your typical college campus. I did not love it but I can’t say I hated it either. My son’s friend enjoy attending Sam and has had a great experience their. I can’t address their academic’s because I have zero experience with that part of Sam.

I attended Sam Houston and I enjoyed it at the beginning. Great professors, beautiful campus and nice students. It is still a school where students leave over the weekend. After two years I was bored and hated Huntsville or as students call it Huntsvegas. Its in the middle of nowhere and quite boring unless youre a small country town person. I also found the academics were far too easy. I ended up transfering for my final two years to NYU and am much happier. If you do look at SHSU the hang outs are potato shack, yummy yummy, humphreys, and the cinema has 1-2 dollar movies depending on the day. Also Sam has an event at the beginning of each semester called Sammypalooza that brings bands and comedians. The theater program is amazing and they put on broadway worthy performances. The film program is really good too and they bring directors, screenwriters, and filmmakers to campus to show films and hold workshops.

@smactress Thanks for your post! Were you a theatre major? Did you live on campus. If so, how are the dorms? were you in a sorority or other social group? How about the food options?

How was the tour for Texas State as well as UNT?
