Does anybody have any sample ACT essay questions?

In your opinion, should high schools start later in the morning?

That is the paraphrased version of the April question.

do the ACT essays even require literary examples---i mean how do you talk about school uniforms or the start time of school with literary examples? anybody know if literary examples are advised?

yea, actually, i was wondering.... is this like the SAT writing where your evidence doesn't necessarily have to be true and the only thing that's tested is your writing? like, could you say something like "studies have shown that 98% of students who start school before 8 AM get brain cancer"?

LOL. I'm taking the ACTs tomorrow too so ..

it seems like all the essay prompts have something to do with high school...

I have the real ACT book (new one) and the three examples are (paraphrased):

Should students maintain a C average to get a driver's licence?

Should community service be req. for grad?

Separate classrooms for males and females??

Meh, seems a LOT easier than SAT writing prompts.

If I already took the SAT essay (scored an 11), should I do the ACT essay?

It seems ACT concentrates on your writing skills (and power of persuassion). How refreshing that a writing test should do that. As the questions seem to be more opinion based, you need to provide a few examples or opinions to prove your point of view. My d also liked the fact that the essay was the last section of the test instead of the first section as it is on the SAT. By the time she did her writing portion and a critical reading portion on the SAT, her mind was "mush" before she got to her first math question. And Kristin is right, the April question was regarding if the school day started too early. My d is taking the ACT tomorrow too. She HATES the SAT and will not be taking it a 2nd time. Good luck to all.

Hey marny, if one was to do poorly on the SAT--would colleges disregard a low score for an awesome ACT score?

That seems to be the mantra of all colleges--they will use the best score. Last year, D's friend did fine on SAT's (1450 range) but GREAT on ACT's. It got her off the Harvard waitlist. So I tend to believe the colleges when they say that they will use the best score. But just remember the test scores are only one aspect of your application. Grades-rank-EC's-recommendations will be looked at too.

What sort of examples should one prepare for the ACT Essay?

Last time, I was foolish enough to practice for the essay using SAT prompts. The question (something school related) caught me off-guard. From prepping for SAT, I had been taught the lit/hist/modern format and hence... I had to completely change that for the ACT. Do not use SAT prompts for ACT practice!!

So basically... what I'm asking is, what sort of examples would you guys suggest for ACT? Format - 1st person/casual? Personal experience examples?

I completely did not use any literary examples, etc. In fact, I believe that my essay was complete BS for the April exam.

I wrote about how energetic I am in the morning (yeah right...), how sports are after school, and some bunch of other BS.

I still managed to get a 9. Whatever. For the effort I put in, I did surprisingly well.
