All of the violin faculty at SFC are truly phenomenal and have vibrant solo careers. Bettina, Axel and Ian are wonderful…world class. Alexander Barantschik who is concertmaster of the SFS also teaches and gives master classes. You will definitely be expected to learn and master solo repertoire. Chamber music is hot everywhere these days…tell your mom its a nice option for violinists. I don’t have a breakdown of how much time is spent doing what…I’d contact the Conservatory and ask to talk to some violin students. You’ll get great training. The rest is up to you. Congrats again!

Maybe that’s what’s needed to fill the seats. Instrumental mascots… Harry Horn, Vickie Violin , Ophelia Oboe wandering the aisles, performing silly antics betwixt movements. Perhaps even a seventh movement stretch.

And if we can start taking hot dogs and beer to our seats, I may double my LA Opera subscription.

CC’s opera-mom has a D currently at SF as a VP major, so if anyone has questions, she would be the one to ask…

musicamusica - Brochure just came today for LA Opera. Light sabers and red converse tennis shoes - better than hot dogs and beer any day.

Oh yah, stylin’ Der Ring des Nibelungen with my homies.

Just noticed that this thread was from 2007!!!

I think Laura7 brought it up because of her SFCM inquiry.

If you haven’t heard Peter Schickele’s “New Horizons in Music Appreciation” - Calling the Beethoven’s 5th as if it were a ballgame, complete with colorful commentary - Google it and listen to it on YouTube.

D and I just returned from SFCM for her audition for BM/voice. She loved the school, loved SF and would be very happy there if accepted.

my cincinnati regional audition happened to be at the SFCM. It is very small from what I know, and i was never interested because they only have classical guitar, but it had a great vibe and superb location

Good luck to your Daughter HMH…my daughter is happy there as a VP major…let me know if you have questions…makes a difference which teacher she is assigned as to whether I would recommend it or not.

Thanks, opera-mom. Just sent you a PM.

I have a question as a prospective undergrad at this school…should prescreen auditions be done at a professional studio? I know other schools such as the Cleveland Institute of Music have stated that home recording quality is acceptable, but I couldn’t find anything on the SFCM’s website. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I know of three undergrads who got into SFCM grad, none of them had professional studio prescreen CD or DVD’s. If you are worried about them, call.

I think that a prescreen that is of high enough recording quality for CIM would be fine for SFCM and probably all other undergrad programs. I think that the recording space (i.e. small tinny-sounding room vs. an appropriate-sized space) is probably more crucial than studio vs. non-studio. Most of the students I am familiar with (not that many) have not recorded in a studio, and I have not noticed any difference in the results between the non-studio and studio recordings.

My daughter did all her prescreens using a home video camera, no external mic. We set it up in the performance hall of the precollege music school in our hometown. She passed all her prescreens (and so did her friends whose families spent thousands on professional recordings.) Aside from the accompanist, and not counting the price of the camera, we spent only a few dollars.

Thanks for the answers! Really helpful :)
