Sarah Lawrence or Fordham?

Hello!

I'm trying to decide between Sarah Lawrence and Fordham for the class of 2017!

I'm planning on majoring in English and I hope to become a novelist. Thus, I want to go to a college with great English/writing program!

I've visited Fordham (Lincoln Centre) and it's gorgeous! However, I'm not sure if the academics are worth the cost of attendance! How are the professors? Undergrad program? Graduation rate?

Sarah Lawrence is unranked on US News.. would you please give me an overview of the quality of education? What it's like going there?

Would you please list the pros and cons of either or both choices? Where would you recommend?

These are two very different types of institutions. It might be good to think first about what you want in terms of basic educational experience. Fordham has a rather extensive, traditional general education requirement; something like 8-10 courses if I remember correctly. Thus, a fair amount of your curriculum will be structured by what the administration and faculty believe you should study. And this will mean somewhat less individual choice. There are both positives and negatives about this kind of experience (as with all experiences) but you should understand going in that that is what it is about. SLC is quite the opposite. There are few curricular requirements; indeed, there aren’t even majors. Everyone graduates with a degree in “liberal arts.” Navigating such a system requires greater individual initiative on the part of the student in crafting a coherent program.
You can get an excellent education at either of these places, but the experience will be very, very different, especially in terms of how the specific courses in your academic program are determined.

Sarah Lawrence has the better name recognition and reputation and because you want to go into English and want a good writing program, I would go with Sarah Lawrence. You should really decide what you want in a college experience because these are very different types of schools.

Sarah Lawrence’s focus is on writing so for English I would absolutely choose Sarah Lawrence
