My s just got accepted to both (and BU, Goucher, Hunter, New Paltz). Those are his 2 top choices. Can anyone compare them for me?

I think the two are very similar. They both are pretty writing intensive, have a basically open curriculum and are often called “quirky”. Neither are big on grades

At Sarah Lawrence, NYC is super accessible, which some students love. It also has quite an awesome study abroad. Their boy/girl ratio is pretty icky(it’s 75% female, YIKES!).

I think the biggest plus for Hampshire is that it is in consortium with Smith, Mount Holyoke, UMass Amherst and Amherst. So, while the school itself is good, but not great, it is surronded by the tippy top schools in the country. I think Hampshire is uglier(sorry, just my opinion!), but has a better boy/girl ratio(65F to 35M)

If I had to choose, objectively I would say Sarah Lawrence, but since I’m going to be a Smithie, I’m biased towards Hampshire… I think either is a great option

Sarah Lawrence without a doubt unless he misses the testosterone. He should visit and decide.

I’d go for Sarah Lawrence too. I’ve heard too many negatives about Hampshire’s physical plant and the propensity for drift. (The latter would depend on the kid, of course.) At Sarah Lawrence, your son could be doing intimate tutorials with profs. The individual learning opportunities are excellent. I also know a very nice young man who is there now and loves it. (He also loves the M/F ratio! :D)
