I just turned 14 & I'm a freshman, but my mom wants me to take the SAT & ACT as a freshman, sophomore, and junior. I think this is a lot, especially if I find myself messing up one year & wanting to retake it (in particular, junior year). What do you think? Is taking it too many times bad? I took it in 7th grade w/ Duke TIP & got a 1290 (math & reading), but I don't see the point of taking it so many times when I don't know the information yet (like math). Please give me your opinions. I am a freshman & I've always had straight A's & I'm in all honors & AP, if it matters. Thank you :)

You should take the PSAT the fall of your sophomore year, you missed the freshman date. Good chance to take a test, you can get your answer sheet and see how you do. It is certainly helpful to begin prepping for the test, taking practice tests, taking time practice sections, etc. Some schools will ask/want ALL test scores - which means you should send in all your ACT and SAT scores. Many will debate if this will help or hurt you. My recommendation would be take the PSAT next fall, and start a regular practice, study schedule to help you prepare. You can certainly take the ACT/ SAT your junior year … my oldest son was done before his senior year even started. I have a freshman, he took the PSAT, will take it again his soph year …and he is doing some prep.

What level math are you in? You really need to be in Algebra II to do well.

I’m in Geometry I figured I’d need algebra II cause I remember last time there being a TON of algebra stuff I didn’t understand.

Actually, I am just like your mom. My son took the ACT as a freshman and continued every year until he got his goal score as a junior. As a senior he has focused on applications and enjoying his last year without the stress of tests.

My sophomore daughter took it as a freshman and actually did better than expected. She is taking it again in February and I want to see how she improves on math now that she is Algebra II and Trig Honors.

Both of my teens prefer ACT. I had my son take a practice combination ACT/SAT test through Kaplan after his sophomore year and he performed better on ACT.

If I had a chance to do this a third time, I would probably say just wait to sophomore year when you are in Algebra II. Both of my teens scored nearly the same score on math as a freshman because they didn’t have enough math at that time.

If you do take it this year, make sure you purchase the answers. This allows you a chance to review the answers you missed so you focus on your weak spot.

Yeah we got the thing where you can see what you missed, & I’m happy we did I’m curious to know what went on, cause I wasn’t sure about a lot of them… I took it yesterday. I actually think I did decent on the math. Even with only Geometry & Algebra 1.
