Hello,
I am in need of help. My questions are regarding SAT and IELTS.
Firstly, for the SAT, do I have to send SAT scores directly to universities that do not allow self-reporting? Do these scores have to be sent by the application deadline? I took the december sat 2019, will my application be denied if the sat results arrive late.
Secondly, I cannot figure out whether universities want to have my IELTS score sent in before the application deadline or if it is fine to send them afterward. I am not a native speaker, but I am completing the IB diploma in the UK. Moreover, how do universities want me to submit these scores?
I would greatly appreciate some help!
The universities I consider applying to: Brown University, Caltech, Columbia University, Cornell University, Yale University, Stanford University, UPENN, Harvard University, UChicago, NYU, Princeton University, Dartmouth University and Duke University.
Self-reporting is not a thing in the US, so yes you have to send all SAT scores directly. In most cases the scores have to arrive by the application deadline.
As you are in an English language secondary school many universities will not require the IELTS, and for those schools there is no worry about when your scores arrive. Check for each college to be sure what their rules are.
I am assuming that you have / expect to have top choices in the UK (or elsewhere), which is why you are only applying to universities for which your odds of admission are teeny-tiny. Even if it is only ‘worth’ your applying to super brand names (b/c of your UK/other options) I would prune your list further. For a start, CalTech and Dartmouth are mutually incompatible environments (not to mention that CalTech took a total of 19 international students last year). NYU is an outlier in the group- why is it there and not (say) MIT?
Yes, you will need to have SAT scores sent directly if the college doesn’t allow self-reporting. No, you will not be rejected if the scores aren’t in by the deadline (as long as the rest of your application is complete), but you should arrange to send them ASAP (especially to colleges considering students for competitive programs on a rolling basis). Colleges are aware of the timeline for the December SATs, so they know about when to expect them, and the delay will be overlooked, but only to a certain point. In most cases your application will not be reviewed until it is complete, so it is to your advantage to get them in as quickly as possible.
Check the colleges websites for IELTS, or else email admissions. It is probably similar to the SATs, meaning have them sent ASAP. You don’t want multiple test scores arriving after the deadline. While colleges are understanding about the December test dates, getting multiple scores in after the deadline might look like poor planning.
Regarding the self-reporting of sat scores, some of the universities I consider applying to allow for self-reporting, though they want the scores to be sent when admitted. Other universities, such as Dartmouth and Cornell want the scores to be sent directly. How long does it take to send sat scores?
Regarding the IELTS, it was unclear whether it had to be sent in by the application deadline and whether they would discard your application if the scores are not sent. But I have self-reported the IELTS scores to the schools.
Thank you for the help and the information about caltech! It was very helpful!
Do you know how I can send the IELTS scores in? Is it enough to self-report them in common app? Is it enough to send a scanned form of my results or does the agency have to send the scores?
If I use NYU as an example, this is what they say about sending in IELTS scores:
"
How do I submit my results to NYU?
For the TOEFL iBT, use NYU’s code 2562.
For the IELTS Academic, search for “New York University” and release results to Undergraduate Admissions as opposed to one of our school or colleges. Similarly, for the PTE Academic, C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency, select “New York University” as opposed to one of our specific NYU schools or colleges. Searching for “NYU” will not return any results; you must search using our official name.
"
Where do they mean to search for “New York University” (beginning of the second paragraph)? Furthermore, what do they mean by “release results to UA”? Can I just email the IELTS scores?
These are questions you have to ask each college’s admissions officers…there should be an international AO, or even a country specific one. So reach out to them and ask your questions…requirements and practices change frequently and they are the best source of current information, not posters on CC.
