After doing some CR practice questions, I review my mistakes. I rationalized why x is the correct answer instead of y. But, I keep making similar mistakes. Any help? :(

do more questions. There’s a pattern. Generally, answer choices with words such as ironic, speculation, criticism, are the correct answer choices. Also I found something interesting: words such as awe, grandeur, forever, fervor, and other words people use in church are categorized as “strong”. This finding is useful because tone questions always entrap students by leaving 2 choices that seem the same-- one strong (e.g.awe) and one weak (e.g. deferential). In a country in which the most influential people believe in Christianity, it is most likely that most Americans would agree that if the passage has a weak tone deferential would be the answer and vice versa.

For your information, If you didn’t already know the CB makes the SAT tests in a way so that most parents can not testify that an SAT critical reading answer choice is horribly wrong.

Read Noitaraprep’s guide. After reading it, my brain clicked and I’ve been scoring high 700s in CR practice tests ever since. Also, practice, practice, practice!
