SAT extra time

My daughter recently was given 504 accommodations at her school for time and 1/2. She is planning on taking the SATs in the spring of 2012. How and when do i try to apply her for extra time? Also, when should i register for the Spring test? Thanks

Contact the College Board RIGHT AWAY! – it takes time to get this approved.

I suggest reviewing their website instructions (go to the SAT section, then “special circumstances”, then “students with disabilities”). Their instructions are very clear and specific. After reading, call them to ask any questions you have. They can instruct you whether you should register first before the accommodations decision is made.

You may need to work with your school to get the application in – I believe all forms and supporting material must be received by collegeboard by January 20 for the March 10 test date – you are much better off if materials are completed early. That way if there are issues you have time to react.

My 10th grade son is dyslexic. I asked for accommodations for the PSAT and it was taken care of for me. He has been classified since K and all of his testing shows that he has the LD so we didn’t really have any problems. I don’t have his score back so I don’t know if the extended time helped. The school psych told me that once he has the accommodations, they will be there for the rest of HS and I don’t have to reapply.

For the ACT, the website seems to imply that you have to apply each year so I am going to wait till next summer to submit the paperwork. Again, my school doesn’t think I’ll have a problem with it.

I was offered accommodations for another of my sons, who outright refused to consider them. I think he was right because he wound up a commended student (he has a writing LD so his writing score was much lower than the rest of the scores or he’d have been a semi-finalist) without the assistance.
