[Uncertain how to proceed with the scene , the actors stopped , awaiting for] further instructions from the director.
Correct answer: (C)Because they were uncertain how to proceed with the scene , the actors stopped and awaited for further instructions from the director.

I choose the original sentence.

Located in present-day Jordan, the [ancient city of Petra growing wealthy] over 2000 years ago through the success of the spice trade.
(B)ancient city of Petra has grown wealthy
(C)ancient city of Petra grew wealthy

I choose C, why it use grew not has grown? (over 2,000 years ago)
Thank you!

1- Not really. C isn’t parallel. C is intended to trick you by introducing another interrogative pronoun “what”. I can’t really understand what answer choice C is trying to say, except that it is trying to perplex you.
choice E is correctly parallel. tell me where you have been and give me an account of your activities there. Did you notice that the two verbs of the sentences are parallel.
2-Again this question is testing your ability of recognizing nonparallel structure of a sentence. awaiting is not in the correct verb tense. Stopped and Awaited. Also there is a Cause and Effect relationship between the two clauses of the sentence. That’s why Answer Choice C starts with “Because…”
3- The question really doesn’t refer to anything that has started in the past but still happening in the present; however, the sentence is talking about the ancient city of Petra. 2000 years ago doesn’t really mean that the city is growing wealthy till now.
Answer Choice B would have worked if the sentence was something along the line of “Located in Present-day Jordan, The ancient city of Petra is still growing wealthy for 2000 years through the success of the spice trade.”
Hope that helps. :)
