Hi, my son took the timed test 1 practice test out the SAT II blue book (most recent edition) for level 2 math. He left 2 questions blank and chose one incorrect answer. Looking at the scoring grid that would be an 800. My question, is this test accurate in terms of his score as related to the actual test he will be taking in a few weeks? I was expecting a score in the ballpark of 700. He took the SAT I on two occasions and scored 720, and 730 respectively. Isn't SAT II level 2 math more difficult than SAT I? Thanks in advance, if this score is accurate he can make better use of his time working on college essays, applications etc. Also, if SAT II math is indeed more difficult he probably should take the SAT I again to improve his score for merit aid etc. Do you agree?

SAT 2 is more difficult in terms of content, but the curve is ridiculously easy for us. SAT 1 you need a near perfect score for an 800, SAT 2 you can miss several questions. 10% of kids get a perfect score on SAT math level 2.

Then there is SAT 2 Math Level 1 which you probably don’t have to worry about, but that matches more with SAT regular, with a similar curve.

On the SAT Level 2 Math Subject Test you can sometimes get 8 wrong and still get an 800. So if your son is only missing 3, he’s probably all set for that test. Maybe have him take one more just to make sure, and please make sure he is strict with the time.

He should also be all set for the SAT as well. From just about every college’s point of view a 730 is just as good as an 800. If there are specific colleges you’re concerned about call their admissions offices directly and ask if there is any reason a higher score would be better (this is doubtful). Your son is probably best off leaving the SAT behind him and focusing on other parts of his college application.
