SAT Japanese Subject Test (November 2015)

To others who took it, how did you feel about it? Specifically, how were the three individual sections?

I felt the listening and usage sections were fine, but the reading section was difficult compared to the CB practice test. Hoping for a 750+.

I thought the reading was hard as well… What were the passages anyway?

I thought the reading was harder than it should have been, but I still did fine because you didn’t have to know all the kanji to figure it out. I am hoping for a little more lenient curve this year.

It wasn’t even the Kanji that was hard, it was the sentence structure. They were very long, especially the passages for the question sets toward the end.

Yeah, a more lenient curve will definitely save my ass.

On the dry fruit passage one of the question was weird. I thought 2 choices were not advertised, the freshness and its being fat free.

Hoping for a lenient curve too!

And the one that asks about the author’s feeling when he/she sees hamburgers, it was weird b/c the author said he/she is Hungry when he sees Bento.

I definitely remember seeing the kanji for oil/fat somewhere

Whats usually the curve? Thought I did well but now im not so confident

The “typical” curve, as shown in the official CB subject test book, is 78/80 = 800, and each -1 from there is generally -10 points. (This takes into account raw score, so 1 question wrong is actually -1.33 raw score.)

Got a 720. I wish the curve were nicer, was going for a 750+. But I’m still happy, I got great results (no family speakers, no classes, completely self-studied the language).

I got a 770. I am not a native speaker, but II have been going to Japanese school every Saturday for the past year before that I merely self studied. Congratulations to everyone!

  1. Im half Japanese but no one in my family taught me the language so I had to learn it myself starting in the 6th or 7th grade
