SAT Math II--How long to study?

I took it cold and got an 800 (but was taking precalc at the time, so was practiced in math in general), some people study for weeks and get <700.

study until you know the material.

I didn't study at all and got an 800. I took in May (after a year of calculus). I think it's a tough test to study for (more of a test of natural ability), although a good pre-calc class does help. I also think becoming very familiar with the different functions of your graphing calculator can be very helpful. You have 60 minutes to do 50 questions, so time can be a big factor, and knowing shortcuts on your calculator could save you some crucial time that you may need to finish the test.

what is the best single book to buy for math 2c and chem subj test (i know, off topic). I see that more people get 800 on the sat2 math than the sat1. Does that mean it's easier, besides the huge curve.

First of all, it is impossible to estimate time without knowing how strong you are in the subject.

Second, I feel that getting a score on math doesn't necessarily go by what courses you are taking. You might be taking AP Calculus BC and end up with 650 because you didn't remember basic geometry. Or you could only be starting trigonometry and end with 690. Why? SAT II touches pretty vast subjects, and not all of them are advanced math topics.

PR's book even mentioned that the best time is to take at the end of trigonometry or pre-calculus year mainly because by doing that, you're not so far away from forgetting geometry and algebra II stuff.

Third, in my personal opinion, you should be able to take it if you have taken trigonometry. You do not need pre-calculus because basic calculus question in SAT II is only about sigma and limit. Just learn L'Hopital's Rule because that simplifies basically almost of all limit questions, and sigma doesn't take much to learn. I say focus on basics more because in order to get a good score on test like this, it's more important to know the basics and NOT miss on them than knowing everything and missing on ones you DO know.

Yeah and try to finish test.. Don't be like me, I only answered 47/50 this time. =p

I saw some body mention Barron's. Is that all you guys do, or is there any other book to practice?

I really need to score very good in this.

Are you talking about Barron's Sat Subject Test Math Level 2 2007? 2008 version is not yet released right?

i took math 2 in may and got a 720 without studying. im pretty sure i could get it up to high 700s or 800 with studying, but idk if its worth it to retake, especially if im appying ED?

any input on the worth of retaking?

I just found this thread-I am prob retaking Math 2 next week. INTENSE WEEK OF STUDYING, here I come. I took precalc and calc last year, so I don’t remember everything… but I will review my notes!

i didn’t study and got a 750. it’s not too hard.

well, I’m not as smart as you

If your math skill is not solid, it’s highly recommended to read the books thoroughly and do all the practice tests to make sure you dont accidentally miss sth. I took me 1 month revising both math 1 and 2 (i hardly look into math 1). I got a 800.

Maybe I overrevised it ‘__’

I used Barron’s too but after McG and PR. It’s not at all that tough. The book’s layout and organization is very messy, do prepare some stationary lol.

To be honest, I took one practice test to adapt to the format and just went in. I took precalc that june though (I was a sophmore). 800. But it is true that if you are not a math type of student, you should study.

Will you please email me the all the formulas i need ?

I posted it awhile back on one of the threads here. Posted about 1-2 months ago in a thread dedicated for math formulas… try to look for it? There aren’t that many current pages for the SAT II.

I’ll be taking AP CALC BC next year and I never took Precalc, only Algebra II. When do you guys think should I take the Math II Subject Test exam? Wait until spring (test season) or try to study now and take it in the fall/winter?

P.S. I’m a rising junior.
