SAT Math Problem

Hey I need a little help with this SAT math problem

Ann, Benito, Chantra, and Desiree are each to be assigned to 1 of 2 vehicles, a bus or a van. How many different assignments of these 4 people are possible if at least 1 person must be assigned to each vehicle?

(A) Four
(B) Six
(C) Seven
(D) Twelve
(E) Fourteen

I know the answer is E. Can someone explain this to me? Thank you.

222*2 - 2 = 14

Explanation: For each of the four people there are two choices (a van or a bus),that's why we have 222*2. We need to subtract 2, because they can't all get a van, and they can't all get a bus. We're left with 14.

why can't they all get a van, or why can't they all get a bus?

"at least 1 person must be assigned to each vehicle"
