Sat math questions help?

Hey all,

I have 2 math questions that have me stumped…

The least and greatest numbers in a list of 7 real numbers are 2 and 20, respectively. The median of the list is 6, and the number 3 occurs most often in the list. Which of the following could be the average (arithmetic mean) of the numbers in the list?

7

8.5

10

a. 1 only
b. 1 and 2
c. 1 and 3
d. 2 and 3
e. 1,2, and 3

In the xy-coordinate plane, how many points are a distance of 4 units from the origin?

a. 1
b. 2
c. 3
d.4
e. 5

Thanks!

1) Three must occur twice in order for six to be the median.
The two numbers between 2,3,3,6, and 20 are the variable ones.
2, 3, 3, 6, x, y, 20

Set up the equation to calculate the mean. Set the equation to each of the possible answers.

(2 + 3 + 3 +6 + 20 + x + y)/7 = 7

After rearranging, x + y = 15
Any two distinct numbers between 6 and 20 that adds to 15 will produce a mean of 7.
2, 3, 3, 6, 7, 8, 20 provides a mean of seven.

Do the same for 8.5 and 10.

x + y = 25.5

2, 3, 3, 6, 8.5, 17, 20 provides a mean of 8.5

x + y = 36

2, 3, 3, 6, 17, 19, 20 provides a mean of 10.

e)?
If we are talking about integers only, then c).

2) This question seems sketchy. A circle with radius four centered about the origin should have an infinite number of points a distance of four from the origin.
If we are talking about integers only, then maybe the points four units away on each quadrant axis would give the right answer?

d)?

where did you get these math questions? They seem iffy to me.

The first doesn't clarify if it means integers or all numbers
The second as the poster said, there are infinite number of points 4 units from (0,0)

Yeah, these questions are very weird. The second one is infinity.

The first one clarifies it's real numbers, so you could automatically assume E. I think they meant integers though.

hey , the second question may be " In the xy-coordinate plane axis " in this case the answer is 4 ( 4,0 0,4 -4,0 0,-4 ) check it again if it is like this. if not the answer is infiniite since there are infinite points on a circle .
