SAT or TOEFL?

I have always thought I would take the SAT, but after looking around at the MIT admissions site, I see that I am "strongly recommended" to take the TOFEL since I do not speak English at home (my first language is Farsi). My verbal scores from practice tests aren't that great, but my SAT II's in math/science are strong (800 IIC, 800 Chem). What should I do?

I believe you will have to take both. The TOEFL is not a substitute for the SAT. The TOEFL is to prove that you know the english language. You will have to take the SAT and the TOEFL.

just get over 250 on the TOEFL and they won't care a bit. But the SAT they will care about your section score regardless of score. Remember MIT doesn't accept the writing section score.

Do you mean MIT disregards the SAT I Writing? Will this be the case for the class of 2007?

And when you say MIT will care about my section score, do you mean that will consider my TOEFL instead of my verbal score, or still regard both and treat each section (math, verbal) individually?

don't know about 07 but for 06 they won't count it. no i meant that they will look at your verbal score and math score as well as your total score.

some schools have two options for non-native speakers (i believe mit is one of them)
1. they can take every test that americans do and be done with that
2. they can take the toefl and two sat 2's
i would go for the second option since they will know taht you are a great student bc of the 2 800's and if you have a high enought toefl they will know that you are proficient in english...also the essays will let them know
i would go for the second option but i guess it is up to you...good luck

if I do both, what will they look at? even if i decide to go with TOFEL after taking the SAT I, they still will see my SAT I scores from the SAT score report.

also, is there something like a conversion chart from TOFEL to SAT?

i am in the same boat as you if i decide to apply to mit cuz im spanish...only that i already took the sat 1 so i have no choice...
if you take the sat 1 they will recieve it along with your sat 2's...
there is no conversion from toefl to sat because their difficulty is diferent and they measure different things...toelf is much easier...
ok so now...the only way out of it that i can think of is doing this...send in your score report right now (to all the colleges that you can apply without the sat1) with your two sat 2's...and then take the sat one in october without sending it to any colleges...
if you like your october score you can rush it to colleges, but if you dont, dont send it and then no one will see it...
i hope it helps good luck

would I have a better chance of being accepted if I took the TOFEL.

idk bro i cannot tell you that...if they say that they take both equally and you think that is true then i would go for the toelf...but if you think they preffer the sat then go for it...i just dont think that you will be able to do as well on the english sections of the sat as you did on the sat 2's...especially in the critical reading since it is a skill that you develop with the years not in a couple of months...
again i might be wrong if you are a guy who reads a lot in english, has control of the language and has an extensive vocabulary then you might as well go for the sat...
up 2 u

well i have been speaking english since the 1st grade, and i read jules verne books (reading Mysterious Island now, its great!). but i do admit i do not have an "extensive vocabulary"

no u won't have better chance if u take toefl. getting over 250 or 260 (whatever it is) will show the college that you're able to communicate in English. and u'll easily get over 250/260 b/c u've been speaking English ever since 1st grade.

SAT scores will matter a lot too since many int'l nowadays score very high on the verbal part. it's crazy competitive world.

If you take TOEFL and don't take SAT 1, this clues your English is not a native level. This will reduce your chance.

Actually, the SAT and the TOEFL are very similar exams. You should probably just take the SAT Exam.

"1. they can take every test that americans do and be done with that
2. they can take the toefl and two sat 2's"

No, there's no option like that. You have to take either the SAT or ACT regardless of the TOEFL. Some schools, however, offer the option of waiving the TOEFL if you get over a 600 on the verbal part of the SAT. The ACT, unfortunately, doesn't have this option.

wvernrider123: you have no idea what youre talking about...of is a test of aptitude and the english is much more advanced...the other is atest of english to see if you can understand and communicate yourself in writing...

"Testing Requirements

For entry year 2006: SAT I (either the old version or the new version, available beginning March 2005) or the ACT (with or without the optional writing test). In addition, we require three SAT II Subject Tests: one in math (level 1 (Ic) or 2 (IIc)), one in science (physics, chemistry, or biology e/m), and the third in any area of your choosing.

For entry year 2007 and beyond: SAT I or the ACT with the writing test. In addition, we require two SAT II Subject Tests: one in math (level 1 (Ic) or 2 (IIc)), one in science (physics, chemistry, or biology e/m).

For non-native English speakers (for entry year 2006 and beyond): You have two options: 1) take the tests required for native English speakers (see above), or 2) you may take the TOEFL and two SAT II Subject Tests, one in math (level 1 (Ic) or 2 (IIc)) and one in science (physics, chemistry, or biology e/m)."

That's a surprise, seeing as MIT is a pretty highly regarded college. Most good colleges require international students to do the same amount of work as American/Canadian applicants + TOEFL.

But if you can get in with TOEFL + SAT II's + Financial Aid = definitely go for it.

"TOEFL + SAT II's" is not impossible, but it is very very difficult.

yeah I've never heard of a TOEFL + SATII acceptee while I have heard tons of High Verbal SATI+ High SATII who were internationals. Some never went to a english speaking country.

if i go ahead and take the SAT, will colleges understand a low verbal score?
