sat prep

i am about to begin sophomore year after the summer, i want to make sure i can get at least 2100 on the SAT (yes i am nearly sure that i am capable of that), i think i am strong in math but weaker in english. so is this a sufficient time to start preparing and taking classes? i only have a year. anyway i was wondering where i could take classes or get a reliable private tutor or take classes somewhere nearby that will actually improve my scores guaranteed. i have heard of kaplan? is that where i should go or is there somewhere better for some reason? also is it better to go to a class where it is cheaper or is it necessary to spend more and get a private tutor? thanks!!!

ok, im new so… :'l

Hi,

I teach SAT classes and tutor privately; I think classes are the better value, but some students just do not learn well in the classroom environment and need to work one-on-one to maintain focus. Or, some students have a single weakness, like geometry, so tutoring becomes more time-efficient. Most of the students on this board are highly motivated and do quite well studying on their own with the Official SAT Study Guide (aka the Blue Book) and other test prep books. You may want to begin studying on your own with the Blue Book before choosing a prep class or tutoring. And “SAT Preparation” seems like the right board for posting your questions—not sure why you were told to look around. I am sure some students will give you tips on classes.

Reading is the most difficult area in which to improve, so starting to study as a sophomore is a good idea. You should find a good vocab list (Direct Hits is the most recommended) and begin there. But you should also practice reading dry, boring articles and concentrating on the main idea and author’s attitude as you read. We have a list of magazines with those types of articles here: [PowerScore SAT Preparation | Free SAT Help Area](SAT Reading Comprehension Practice | PowerScore). Try to tackle one a day.

Writing is much easier to improve and a good book or teacher will point out the most common error types and teach you how spot them.

alright thanks for writing so much and it was helpful. sadly i don’t have anything nearly as good to reply with.
