SAT scores and admittance

I know that for Rose Hulman the average math is 680 and the average verbal is 630. If my scores are 650 math and 520 verbal...will that damper my chances of admittance? I have great extracurriculars and will good recommendations. Class rank is 10/167 and gpa uw is 3.851. So, will my SAT scores REALLY hurt me....and if so, how do I make up for that with the rest of the application?

SAT's are not everything and any admissions counselor here will tell you that.

They're a good indicator, but the most important is your performance in your high school math and science classes, they don't really look at your GPA as a whole, because they're not so concerned if you got a C in drivers ed or PE, they're more concerned about your grades in your math and science classes and that you're taking the most challenging classes that you can.

So to answer your question, no SAT's will not make or break your application because to succeed here you're going to have to work hard, and the best indicator of that kind of success is not the SAT/ACT, but rather your performance over your high school career in those math and science courses. They look at the test scores, but it won't overshadow a good transcript or make up for a bad transcript.

Also important is that you have extracurriculars, sports, clubs, a job, whatever, something besides school that you do to keep you busy because time management is an important skill here.

I agree with Nic. The SAT will not bust your chances at getting into Rose. You've got a competitive math score, and your GPA is quite good.

It's interesting to me how much more Rose weights GPA and class rank than SAT scores. I knew a guy who applied to Rose with a 1590 / 1600 SAT and didn't get in because he had bad grades in high school. He was a bright guy, but he just didn't try hard in any subjects other than math. Rose wants to see that you work hard -- not that you're incredibly, amazingly brilliant. If you can show them that, you're golden.

By the way -- your chances of admission increase, in my opinion, the earlier you can apply. I think my friend got rejected because he didn't show interest early on and applied near the deadline. Try to be one of the first people to get that application sent in...I think it does wonders.

Good luck in your search!
