SAT scores are a better indicator of success in college than high school GPA

Gpa tells nothing because it varies from school to school

I concur...
seriously
Yes HSs provide scale of their grading system and high school info coupled with avg. SAT and all that, but can't be all fair and standardized. Even in one HS there are hard and easy teachers for any subject... In the national scale, GPAs are not fair at all and doesn't say much about an applicant's academic ability...

I agree...GPA isn't fair to some ppl

And of course the SAT is perfectly fair to everyone!

Lets just brush aside those statistics about a certain gender underpreforming... or certain socio-economic classes, or dare I say it: certain RACES.

The SAT isn't as hard as people make it sound...I mean I don't know if I'm doing well to say, compared to CC, but to be honest, I think it's fair.

I come from a Mexican-American background, and my mom is single parent. I don't think I'm disadvantaged. Why? Because I make every effort to maximize my education the and doors it opens. Don't have a prep book? I save up. Education is important to me. Don't have the money? I go to the library. Education is important to me.

I also think the SAT is a better indicator. I got one B in my high school in english this year and it drops me like 20 in rank and a 2300 on the SAT, and my friend has a 4.0 with an 1830 on the SAT. Just because i got unlucky in one class and got a 89.1% when i needed an A, 89.5% his rank is much higher than mine.

What makes it even worse is that colleges look at rank over gpa, so they'll think since my rank may be 20/435, that there are a lot of smarter people in my school. I hate how so many people have a 4.0 in my school because getting a 4.0 requires some amount of luck.

BTW, me and my friend are both asian males, so dont think that was a factor. In fact, he grew up upper-middle class, i grew up relatively poor, although we're neighbors now.

Oh man...that sucks...and isn't very fair

I mean you have a flippin' 2300~~!!!

agreed with tussin. Paco, you have a very wrong idea about what respectable is. I suppose getting a 2000 which is roughly 90th %tile isn't good enough for our country's colleges. Go get a life.

Okay, I'm sorry if I offended any of you. jakem333, -you- should really get a life since you obviously take this so seriously.

I was just providing an example of pointing out that people with high GPA's (3.9, 4.0) have comparably low SATs (1990, 2000, whatever), while others have a lower GPA (3.6, 3.7) yet have a much higher SAT (e.g., 2310).

I just find that not fair to some people, because it really isn't. But that's just how life is, and you just gotta deal with what you have and make the best of it.

i have a life. I just don't like arrogant idiots.

Of course it's fair. those people with the "low" SAT scores obviously work hard for their high GPA's. and for the people with the 2300 and 3.6, it's their fault for not trying as hard as they can and not getting grades that reflect their potential.

Also, alot of people on this site go to very difficult private schools. These people still score high on the SAT's (it's standard), yet their GPA's are lower. This may seem unfair, but colleges do recognize whether or not a student is coming from a difficult private school. If you're a student with a 2300 and a 3.6 GPA at an average public school, then it doesn't mean that our system is unfair. It just means you didn't work hard for the higher grades.

I agree with you all, but let's keep in mind that getting a good grade in school but getting a bad SAT b/c of one bad day/mistake is more understandable to adcoms than getting bad grade in school b/c of whatever reason and getting a good SAT...

The things with that excuse, one bad day/mistake, is that you can take the SAT multiple times for the highest score.

The SAT is a crap indicator if you go to one of the hardest schools in the nation and still get a good GPA. The GPA would overrule the SAT in this case.

That's all I have to say.

so that's like how many schools out of like a million?

"Of course it's fair. those people with the "low" SAT scores obviously work hard for their high GPA's. and for the people with the 2300 and 3.6, it's their fault for not trying as hard as they can and not getting grades that reflect their potential."

We could be talking about a guy taking regular classes and getting a 4.0 - that would definitely explain the low SAT score of 1900. Just a hypothetical but perfectly possible and realistic example.

The 3.6 person may be taking all honors/AP courses, rigorous schedule that reflects in their high SAT score - 2300.

So, it is not fair to everyone.

i think the majority of kids with 1900's are smart and capable students at any academic level. i also think that a 4.0 student shows hard work and commitment to academics.

so in conclusion, a 4.0/1900 student is a competitive student in any academic atmosphere. sure a 4.0/2350 might be more competitive, but not by much.

and again calling a 2000 a "low" sat score is rediculous. that is a high 1300s score and in the middle 50% of almost all the nation's top colleges.

jakem333-

That's just not true. For one thing, as has been pointed out before, even in an "average" public high school there can be an enormous difference in difficulty among teachers. Is it really fair for the kid whose luck it is to be randomly assigned the hardest teachers to suffer a lower GPA and look lazy/stupid? Furthermore, it's not fair to say that just because someone has low grades that he/she is lazy. I myself had low grades in high school, but I also had personal problems of my own which made it difficult for me to do my best in school. There are a wide variety of reasons why someone isn't doing well in school, and the truth is, most school teachers/administrators don't care enough to help or reach out to every troubled kid. I'm not saying the SAT is the best judge, but at least it IS standardized so everyone has the same shot.

I agree with glucose. The SAT has so much prep material out there. A kid with perfect grades from a crappy high school can't claim that it's the school's fault for not preparing him/her well enough, since he/she can just go out and buy and/or check out a prep book. It would be a lot easier to prepare for than a school test (at least at my school and at a lot of other schools.)

But unfortunately, colleges still prefer seeing a high GPA/ low SAT vs a High SAT / low GPA. at least that's what my GC told me...

lol i got a 3.94 spa all honors few aps and i got a 1750 on my sats
