SAT: Subject Test Mathematics Level 2 Post-Test Discussion Thread

The base can’t be the same. The radius is only the radius at the base of the cone… as you go higher up the cone, the width gets thinner, so the radius shrinks. Parallel just means it’s a straight cut through… like not at a strange angle or anything. Doesn’t mean anything about base.

I thought this one was quite hard, 43?

You are not using the same base though, that is the difference. Since you are cutting parallel to the base to make a new cone, the old base is cut off and a new base is formed

oh i see what youre saying now, however i thought the problem said the top of the cone was cut off, otherwise you wouldnt be able to calculate it

If the top of the cone is cut off, you wouldn’t have a cone anymore…

if a party hat is sliced ( parallel to base) in the middle, there leaves

 1. a smaller cone (from the tip of the original party hat)
 2. an ugly thing on the bottom that’s not a cone

how do u find the radius of the new cone

ratio. old height / new height = old radius / new radius

You had to use that the volume was 1/2 and plug in the ratio of new radius and height to the old one and see if you get 1/2 the volume. So just guess and check is what I did

So far, I’ve:

Omitted 2
-conical vertex
-(√21,2) question

Wrong 3
-only mean increases (not SD)
-#50
-cone cut parallel

I better not have any more stupid mistakes.

I didn’t think it was so bad, could have been worse. Probably missed 3-4, which should still be an 800 crossing fingers

dnt u just use trig cause u get two sides of the triangle

Well i completely bombed that test, but im having trouble because i dont know what to do next/ I can take it again next year, but i dont know if colleges see both test. Anyone help me out…

Crap.
Missed 2 now. (cone volume one and equidistant set of points in 3 dimensions)

Possibly missed:
Periodic one
Center of conic

/scared

@Brotherjames37, I have the same problem :P

Well, I & III are agreed on for the roman numeral one (see a few pages back if you are confused). Z=0, 11 for log (pr^2), sphere one went from 3,4,5 to 6…anything else?

@whynothogwarts, yeah man. Like i know I am capable of getting a 800, so i probably will retake it next year (in october). If the college i do apply to does want both scores, whatever, they will see 720 and then a 800.

Was center of conic (-2,5)

Which was odd function? 3^x?

tan x was odd.

any exponential functions is neither even nor odd.

@Brotherjames37 exactly the same situation here, I had been getting 800s all the time in the Sparknotes ones and the PR and 750’s in Barrons which apparently translates to 800s here but for some reason I totally blanked out today :stuck_out_tongue: I can’t even cancel the scores because I did chem aswell which went much better than expected but I guess if colleges see a 720 and then an 800 they’ll give you credit for the improvement.
