SAT tutoring for students with ADD

Our son has ADD, predominantly inattentive type. He took a Princeton Review prep course for the SAT, and the results were not impressive: total 1100 CR and Math, which was almost exactly what he scored on the practice test before the course. So we are considering whether to try a private tutor -- with reluctance, as it is very expensive! Does anyone here have experience with individual tutoring vs. group classes for SAT prep, for students with ADD? Our son takes medication, which helps with concentration, but not with slow information processing and poor working memory. Thanks for any advice.

Wish I’d come across your post sooner, but I’m an SAT tutor who specializes in working with ADD students.

Obviously take this with a grain of salt, but I think tutoring is vastly superior to classes for ADD students…I wish families found me before investing anything in classes! I’ve taught classes before, and they’re distracting for students who don’t have trouble with concentration. The one-on-one approach allows students to get a personalized prep program, which a class can never do. ADD students also tend to have gaps in their knowledge (i.e. weak spots in geometry for example), which a typical prep class can never address sufficiently.

I’d also strongly recommend your son consider the ACT over the SAT, although if he’s sunk a lot of time into SAT prep, it may be hard for him to change streams. If you’d like to chat, PM me.

Wish we had seen your post earlier swans004, but we did find a tutor and so far it seems to be going well. I do think you are right about tutoring being preferable to classes. As for ACT vs. SAT, on the recommendation of his counselor, he did practice tests for both of them some time ago, and he did considerably better on the SAT so decided to focus on that.

Glad he’s making progress. Best of luck!
