sat writing mc help please!

(Although the) coach had (predicted that) the team would have a winning season, the (fans were) surprised by the (success) of the young players.
No Error.

Normally and instinctively, I think it's no error, but then I chose "success". Why shouldn't it be successes instead of success? I thought that because young players is plural, success had to be plural as well? For a lot of the questions, plural nouns require plural nouns/objects, so what are the exceptions and how do you know if you should use plural or singular (such as success or successes)? Thanks!

bump please!

SAT writing also messes with me. I don’t know the answer though. But it definitely seems like no error, but I can put my finger on it.

“success” is being used in the following sense:

Things relating to extent are never pluralized.

It occurs to me that “success” refers to the collective success of the players as a team, not each player’s individual success (which would be “successes”).

The intent was probably what I described in post #4.

Is that from a real SAT?>
