sat writing questions

ms. jordan proudly demonstrated her company's most popular product, a watch that flashes the time in lighted numerals when pressing a button.

can somebody explain to me why pressing a button is wrong? is there a more idiomatic phrase or something?

another question
is there a rule that states that a pronouns (such as "it") refer to what they're closest to?

In that sentence, there is no subject 'pressing a button.' It just doesn't make much sense.

"its button is pressed." would make more sense.

And for the second question, I'm not sure if there's a 'rule' per se but it just makes logical sense.
