Hello there!

I am currently a junior and hope to major in Mechanical Engineering. I'd appreciate it if you guys could answer the following questions:

1) Took the MathIIc test last year and got a 650. Am hoping to retake. Is retaking the SATII recommended or is there an unofficial limit to the number of times one must take it?
2) Do I have to take a Physics SATII since i'm going into engineering or am I allowed to take any other test ( such as World History )? I took my first sample practice test for Physics from the Sparknotes prep book and got a raw score of 44 ( 690 ) so am not sure if I'd do well on the real test.....

Thanks much.

1) I don't see why you couldn't re-take it. If you think you could do better, go ahead and take it again.

2) You definitely don't have to take Physics if you want to major in engineering. I applied to the engineering schools at all of the schools I applied to and took Math IIc, US History, and Literature. And don't worry, I got into those schools too (except Yale...but who needs them anyway...).

1) If I may ask, which schools did you apply to? Did they include any other ivy leagues or competitive schools?

2) What score should I aim for in my SATII's ( such as the Math IIC ) If i'm applying to Brown/Upenn?

Thanks.

1) I applied to UF, Northwestern, Duke, and Yale. I will be attending Duke next year.

2) Most likely in the 700-800 range would be good enough. My scores were Math-800, Lit-730, and History-660 (which was mainly due to lack of planning and studying...I took it like 6 months after finishing the class)

It really depends on the schools you're applying to, I mean something like MIT requires a math and science from what I could remember on the application. Generally, try to get a variety of tests, personally I did math iic, chemistry, and spanish. So yea, just go for it, and be careful in re-taking too many times or else schools will be wondering why you're wasting you're time taking standardized tests and not enjoying life. So yea, plus SAT II's really helped me to get into college this year considering I averaged 770 opposed to an average of 666 on the SAT's. So yea, they're really helpful at the Ivies and other top tier colleges just so you know :)

doh...Not confident that i'll get a very good score on the physics test. Probably average around a 700 so not sure if its worth taking a shot or not...

I am good at memorization so am hoping that the World History test should not be a problem for me and was counting on that. Doh.... i'm confused :(

My college list is:

Brown
Upenn
Tufts
Northeastern
BU
Penn State
Clark

Okay, well Brown, UPenn, and Tufts all require either SAT II's or ACT's so personally I would recommend to go for the SAT II's, btw, don't worry, I got into Tufts w/ a 2000 SAT, so I'm sure you'll do fine, and good luck :). And a score of 700 is considerably good on the SAT II's since all the perecentiles are based on a self-selective pool as well as the fact that sciences tend to have some of the lowest percentiles where as the languages easily have the highest percentiles.

Tony, which school did you decide to go to?

Also, if a school requirse only 2 SAT II's and I take three, will they see all three scores or do I get to choose which scores do I want to send?

Thanks much.

I chose to go to Harvard, they should see all three since you can't withhold any scores.

hey guys is there specific SAT IIs i need to take to get into a UC?

ive taken literature and US history and odne pretty well on them

haha, 800 for IIc for me and 760 on IC...honestly...its easier to get a good score on IIC then IC...hmm..haha, but other then that...i got like a 690 on history..so yea...this post is probably really pointless for you...haha

electric lunch - no spec SAT IIs

wazzup - if you remain unsatisfied with the scores you get from SAT II books, you could always find a tutor.

It depends on what school you want to go to, but you might want to take a science SAT II.

the general rule is, you don't want to take any test more than 3 times unless you really have to (ie you're still bombing them) other than that, for the set of colleges you're looking for, try to aim for 750+, especially for like brown. and yeah, if you wanna go to engineering, i'd suggest a science, so chem or physics or bio, and try to get above 700.

haha, yeah, math IIC is waaay easier, considering that you can omit (not miss) 7 or 8 questions and still get an 800, as opposed to IC, where you miss one and its like, 790...and even though it is easier, careless mistakes are a killer
