Saw this CD column about legacy on Reddit and thought I'd share my thoughts

LF – Listen to UVA (from a couple years back), not me if you want.

“We plan to maintain our current model, in which out-of-state legacy applicants are treated as if they are Virginians. The offer rate for Virginians to the University was 44 percent this year, the non-Virginian offer rate was 24 percent. There is a significant advantage to being a Virginian in our review.”

I have 3 OOS legacy kids. One got in, one did not. So not a slam dunk by any means. We could definitely tell that the one who got in had a boost as compared to non-legacy OOS-ers we know who applied and were denied.

One still in HS, who probably wouldn’t need the legacy boost. But who also isn’t likely to pick UVA. For that kid, wish we had a boost at some other school…

Cheers!

The relevant number is that something like 10% of UVa’s ACADEMIC budget is funded by the state of Virginia. That is a critical percentage that would be hard to replace. However, it is a huge drop from pre-Recession levels.
