Say "thanks" to a helpful CC member!

CE, I understand, hence the “digging”. Just thought we might be able to get it as a notification like PMs and messages.

I’ve learned a lot from CC, so I try to pay it forward if there’s an opportunity. The main reason is that I’m a parent of kids in/applying to college and I enjoy helping students achieve their eduational dreams. Occasionally, I’ve delivered a message from a parental point of view to a student. It’s by no means a criticism, but an opportunity for the student to think about something they’ve asked about that may not turn out so well if they don’t make a good choice. Usually I’m not the only one with that message, but in some cases, the OP may not like what is posted, or take it as a criticism. In this case, it may result in a negative review of me and others who post the same advice.

The advice is not criticism. Everyone wonders what the right thing to do is sometimes, and the person who asks the question is commended for thinking about it. Someone who is not concerned about doing the right thing won’t ask.

I hope that the ability to give negative reputation feedback will not stop people from posting valuable advice. It won’t stop me as I think the great thing about CC is the quality, and honesty of the advice here.

@romanigypsyeyes…Gotcha, I didn’t know if you had found some other way that was more complicated.

@momofthreeboys…hmmm that’s odd. I’m using Chrome and as when I click “My Control Panel”, the reputation thing is right at the top under “subscribed threads”. It lists what thread the reputation was given on, and the date, and if any comments were made.

It doesn’t appear until someone has actually ‘given’ you points. Then it will show up.

I appreciate being able to recognize especially helpful posters. I dont think it is necessary to have a dislike option. If a post is reprehensible, report it. Otherwise, “if you dont have something nice to say…”.

So what is the significance of the green boxes which I see a few people have 2. It would seem that you should be able to mouse over anything and know what is it.

I also want to know why some people have a white cc next to the scale and some a yellow cc next to the scale? Only when you mouse over the scale do you have a clue it is a ranking feature.

Should be interesting, possibly useful since we all know the current number of post count does not determine a quality poster.

Yellow CC means poster is online.

Number of green squares increases with the amount of reputation points a poster earns.

Thanks. So I have been to my control panel and do not see anything above the area of my subscriptions to indicate my reputation. I use safari.

Reputation is a new feature as of today so you may not have earned any yet!

I think this is kind of dumb, but I’ll play. Here’s the thing I have learned about CC: it takes a long time to figure out who the knowledgeable posters are versus those just throwing out uneducated opinions. New users aren’t going to see/understand this system which is ultimately pretty subjective anyway - there is already a LOT of information to absorb on this site. It seems sort of like a popularity contest, really. Perhaps that is fitting, as we are talking about high school ----> college.

You may choose to ignore it but for those who value references, it is that. Call it a popularity contest if you will. We are a bit old for that and I dont know what would be gained by anyone giving reputation for the heck of it. I will choose to give it when I appreciate a post or a poster and I will take it as affirmation of a poster’s credibility when I am looking for advice. Just sayin’…

This concept of giving reputation as a way of feedback is common on internet forums, by the way. It is not something CC came up with but a feature they have decided to turn on.

GAMom2012, whether it turns out to be a popularity contest depends upon whether one is approving the post or recognizing that the post was helpful. On TripAdvisor, people can check a box for a review that was helpful. It doesn’t seem to be abused there, but the nature of the posts is a little different.

If there are people using the site to sell their services, they’re being awfully stealthy about it. I’ve seen the occasional spam post, but those get dealt with pretty quickly. That’s not to say the occasional poster doesn’t manage to be annoying with his know-it-all, got-something-to-say-about-everything attitude.

Roger, you called them dots, but they look like little green squares to me. Did we all start with one?

Everyone starts with one. Sorry if it makes me a know it all for answering in Roger’s place. Comes from experience as a moderator on another forum.

I thin everyone started with 10 reputation points, so we all got one.

For the record, I don’t “like” this idea.
On an anon forum, where too many believe it’s all a lottery and your chances depend on what the adcoms had for dinner last night, we’re going to get folks adding dots for what may be crappy input, pushing myths, etc.

If you want a “like” system for individual posts, go with that. Don’t imply lots of dots means some level of savvy. Who’s judging?
